I was talking to one of my buddies at our local HD shop he said they used cats in the mufflers for couple of years. And then they realized people would change out mufflers so the cat is in the head pipes now so I don't if its true or not.

apparently this is true. I read on a HD site that from sometime in 05 and only on some models they installed cats in the mufflers for a couple years then switched to putting them in the pipes. So if you find a set of 2010's or newer mufflers your good to go. But you should check for the cats just to be sure.

Well I got a set of the RK's mounted on mine today. I have no idea what year they came off. The only thing I could find that looked like a PN# the last twwo digits were -09. The right one as you sit on the bike is straight thru till about maybe 5" from the end and it has like a block off plate to keep it from straight thru. The left is made different, maybe 8-10" from the inlet it has something that drops down about half the width of the hole. Sort of looks like a ramp of sorts. Looking up the pipe from the back it sort of looks the reverse. Didnt see anything thing that looked like the catalitic stuff that fell out of my muffler in days long gone. Honest I accidently dropped a pipe in the converter and all that stuff just fell out. The pressure comming out the mufflers feels about the same. I used the "P" clamps to mount. I just need to find a wide clamp. I'm looking for something else besides the V-Twin job. Call it my protest. I hate it when there is only one supplier for something. Right now I'm using hose clamps. Aint purty but it works. I'll be by the J&P store in Daytona in a week or so and think I'll see what I can scare up.

I got Road King mufflers mounted on my 2008 Venture today. All went well. I got the pipes from a friend for fifty bucks. I purchased RK muffler clamps from Buckeye Performance for $39.95. I had a friend make the muffler brackets out of 1/8" aluminum, two inch width. I used 5/16" -18 bolts, 1/2" length with a lock washer. I didn't know about muffler expander tools, so I got a two by four, covered it in terry cloth to make it soft, and pounded those mufflers on with a fifteen pound hammer. Gently of course.

 

Everything fits well, and the sound is comfortably lower. Not so much louder, and I can still hear the stereo.

 

As a side note, I found out that removing the saddlebags is easy, just four bolts each, and you get a great view of the rear wheel should you want to clean it. You don't need to mess with the bag guard rails either.
