Ok, I was changing my spark plugs and about half way through I noticed a small oblong shaped nut on the floor, I have no clue where it came from. Any ideas?

Would have a better chance of helping if you could get some pictures that are in focus.

It loks like a barrel nut, but I am not sure where a barrel nut is used on a second gen.

Can't tell from the pic as far as size but is that hole threaded? Looks to be the right shape for the old insert that slipped inside the hollow post of the L/A batteries to thread the cable bolt into.

Can't count how many of those things I have found sitting on top of the motors on bikes I have worked on.

The photos are a bit fuzzy, but that looks like a nut that is often supplied with small lead-acid batteries. Many of the batteries that fit our bikes have a rectangular hollow post. This nut slides into the hollow part of the post. The screw/bolt that attaches the cables then screws into the nut.

Of course it could be something else...:confused24:

And now for the Smart-A$$ answer that must accompany all requests for technical information: Don't worry about the nut on the floor. You're supposed to have extra parts left over after any maintenance/repair job. :whistling::rotf:

Yep, nothing like a good set of square nuts to hold your battery cable in place.

You have to get used to your nuts dropping a you getolder. Your hands and eyes are not what they used to be.

I agree with the battery termunal nut. When did you change or remove and replace your batt.

Doesnt everybody have a battery nut laying around? :whistling:

I bet it was in the bottom of the bike from an older battery

and worked it's way loose.

I always keep a bag of them on my desk :rotf:

This thread is turning nutty!

Well look who started it.

Have not changed the battery on this bike yet but the previous owner did right before I bought it, only the second time I have had the seat off must have been wedged somewhere just right. Sort of a duh moment when it was suggested it was a battery nut.

I do want to thank everyone for their inputs and of course the smart answers which I always get a kick out of.
