All they are is heat shields. They were in a box when I bought the bike and stayed there for a couple years. When I did the valve cover gaskets I put them on.

 

Now, I can say one thing. They are staying on! The difference in the heat coming back on my upper legs and under the seat was huge. Much cooler in those hot months.

Haven't had mine on for two years since I went to Bikini cut on side panels.

 

Little warmer like Snag said, but not that bad.

My thought, is that the front one also shields the TCI from drowning, when riding in heavy downpours. I have rode in very heavy downpours, in various locations & live on the wet coast.
