steamer Posted February 2, 2012 #1 Posted February 2, 2012 Anyone have experience with these riser extentions? I believe i read somewhere that the risers will hit the plastic ignition cove when the bars are turned to they're full stops. Is this a fact? Is their a way to fix this?
PGunn Posted February 2, 2012 #2 Posted February 2, 2012 Yes they do and I don't know of any fix. One thing that is true don't put the chrome cover in place of the current black one if you plan on using them either.
steamer Posted February 2, 2012 Author #3 Posted February 2, 2012 Are you saying they have better clearence with the black cover?
pickinfred Posted February 2, 2012 #4 Posted February 2, 2012 Are you saying they have better clearence with the black cover? I think PGunn means not to waste the chrome. I have the factory black which I cut the front to have clearance.
SilvrT Posted February 2, 2012 #5 Posted February 2, 2012 Are you saying they have better clearence with the black cover? Clearance is no difference ... but you'll marr the chrome cover or maybe even crack it. I had those risers on my bike and for the odd time I had to crank the steering that far, it was not a concern and the black cover flexes so, to me it was no big deal.
steamer Posted February 2, 2012 Author #6 Posted February 2, 2012 OK, then I guess the Flanders bars are the only way to go. which means I will need longer cables. Guess I'll have to save my$$ for the Flanders and cables. Thanks for the info.
reelrebel Posted February 2, 2012 #7 Posted February 2, 2012 I just installed these last week. Love them. I now have just a little bit more bend at the elbow. More comfortable ride. As for the contact with the cover, it does. But the cover just pushes down a bit and springs back up. If the chrome one is made of a harder plastic it might break? With the stock cover not a big deal. My opinion, no need to cut it. Also if I had to do it again I would have them chromed before install. I will send u a short video of them installed and what I am talking about if you would like, pm your number .
DarkLeftArm Posted February 3, 2012 #8 Posted February 3, 2012 I just installed these yesterday. I found that when I removed the cover there was a grommet in the frame the plastic cover snapped into. I removed this, and also removed the grommet around the ignition switch. The risers still bend the plastic, but it seems to put less strain on the whole megilla, now with the rubber parts removed.
djh3 Posted February 3, 2012 #9 Posted February 3, 2012 Thanks for the idea darkarm. A couple weeks ago when I was looking at this mod I looked at all kinds of posts here. The was one that a fellow had the chrome cover and he just "notched" it where the bars hit. I'm with you all though, with the plastic it aint no big deal.
wes0778 Posted February 3, 2012 #10 Posted February 3, 2012 I the one that did some trimming! Also eventually painted the chrome one black to cut out the glare on the windshield. Now that it is black the cut out shows up even less.
Kirby Posted February 3, 2012 #11 Posted February 3, 2012 I've had the risers on mine for about 2 years now and it has the chrome cover over the ignition switch. I thinks some people believe that chrome can only be applied to some type of metal. We've all seen plastic parts that were chromed. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=527292#post527292
djh3 Posted February 3, 2012 #12 Posted February 3, 2012 @ Wes. Most guys are looking to add chrome and you paint it. A man after my own heart. I have noticed that there seems to be alot of "backside" reflection on this windshield. I think its because of the more or less straight up angle. I would like to maybe some day shorten mine. I can tell its to tall when I get caught in some rain. Living in central Fl, it only a matter of time. Kirby: how and what parts did you make those bushings for the rubber bumpers for the fairing? I noticed today that it sounds as though the fairing has a bit more "rattle" to it. Could it be that the bumpers dont have quite enough support? Let me guess, I'll have to take the risers off yet again to tap the screw holes.

Hey DarkArm you mentioned in the other thread about the bars hitting your leg at full lock. Is the problem solved and how about the reach now? Are the bars to close now? I've got the same problem with long legs and ape arms. Sorry if I'm stealing the thread.
Kirby Posted February 3, 2012 #14 Posted February 3, 2012 I made them out of aluminum in the shop where I work. Yes you'll need to slide one out at a time and drill and tap the risers for the bolt that holds the adapters on.
PGunn Posted February 3, 2012 #15 Posted February 3, 2012 I think PGunn means not to waste the chrome. I have the factory black which I cut the front to have clearance. That was my understanding with the chrome cover but after seeing what a few of you have done with the "notching" it looks like a good solution. The only thing I am or would be concerned with is rain or the car wash water messing something up under there. Has anyone tried using a heat gun to warm up the cover in that area and moving or reshaping the cover so to avoid hitting it? I do realize this wouldn’t be an option on the chrome one but the black one I don’t believe it would hurt anything. I did this same thing on my trailer top (Sears cargo carrier) so I could put stainless railing around the top. I heated the areas where the base mount for the pipes would be so they would stand straight up and it gives me another place to store stuff on the trailer if needed and it adds a little to the looks of the trailer.
Rick Haywood Posted February 3, 2012 #16 Posted February 3, 2012 I have the risers on mine with the chrome ignition cover. I have had it on for 30,000 miles or so and it has never cracked the cover. I also have the chrome ring around the switch its self and I had to bond the ring to the cover so it wouldn't come loose when I turned to sharp but I really do not see any issues with having any of it.
DarkLeftArm Posted February 3, 2012 #17 Posted February 3, 2012 mabeline, a.k.a. Conrad: Yes the problem is solved. Now the clutch and brake levers clear my legs easily. This for me was an inexpensive way to avoid replacing the handlebars. Besides too long legs, I also have a bum right shoulder. This mod brought the grips back towards my chest a little, so I am hoping for a little more comfort there, too. Give it a whirl. I spotted some real cheap barons riser extensions, used from Pinwall on ebay yesterday.
djh3 Posted February 3, 2012 #18 Posted February 3, 2012 Yea someone had them posted here in a thread. Was under $10 I think.
wes0778 Posted February 3, 2012 #19 Posted February 3, 2012 The only thing I am or would be concerned with is rain or the car wash water messing something up under there. No more so than riding in a good rain shower, cut out or no cut out...
Guest Posted February 3, 2012 #20 Posted February 3, 2012 Ive had the Barons for a few years. I loved them and now they grace another VR members bike, who also had them polished. Yes, it will hit the cover and if your running the stock cover its not an issue. I did the Flanders upgrade along with 2" longer Barnett braided SS throttle cables. Found what I needed at Phat Performance in Cali for a reasonable price. Havent ridden it yet but if they are anything like the Barons risers I know ill like them....
PGunn Posted February 4, 2012 #21 Posted February 4, 2012 The only thing I am or would be concerned with is rain or the car wash water messing something up under there. No more so than riding in a good rain shower, cut out or no cut out... Thats true..... having had the tank off a few times already there really isn't all that much under there that would be cause for consern and if it is raining that hard driving would be out of the question anyways....
steamer Posted February 7, 2012 Author #22 Posted February 7, 2012 I believe I found a cheap way to go with this. I found a set of Barons risers on ebay. Opening bid was $14.95, so what the heck I placed a bid. Bidding ended last night, I won with my opening bid. $14.95 plus shipping. Can't beat that.
djh3 Posted February 10, 2012 #23 Posted February 10, 2012 Of those that have risers on, have you noticed it sounds like the fairing has more rattle to it now? To me it did. But a member here hooked me up with some supports he tried on his. I went for about 100 mile trip today and I think its alot better. Thanks Kirby. Ops ch good.

I saw somewhere where someone (no really I did) screwed a 1" round piece of aluminum on to the risers where they extend into the current riser. You attach them so that the faring is connected to the handlebars were.
Kirby Posted February 11, 2012 #25 Posted February 11, 2012 Kinda like this huh???? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=51526&d=1287703597
