oldgoat Posted February 1, 2012 #1 Posted February 1, 2012 ok i have an old dell e510 it has 512 mb of ram yeah i know thats and old computer well it can be up dated to 4gb of ram. well i went on to flebay and got me 2 gb of ram. 1 stick each of 1 gb. after installing these things. the darn computer just went beep beep beep. and would not boot up? so take it apart again remove this ram place back the old ones and bam shes running again. after a carefull look they sent me what looks like a HP ram? now im no computer whiz but im pretty sure that wont work. after sending a request to the store on flebay they said its a generic one and they never had problems with this ram working before in my type of dell? and made a nasty remark that they left positive on my report. but if they get a negitive from me they will not exchange this. so looks like im out $24 bucks. unless im installing it wrong.
Monty Posted February 1, 2012 #2 Posted February 1, 2012 Are you sure you bought the right type of ram. There are many types. How many slots do you have? Try putting just one in the 1st slot, and see if it works. Need more info.
GAWildKat Posted February 1, 2012 #3 Posted February 1, 2012 I agree with Monty, you may have gotten the wrong type of ram, OR put the ram in backwards. I'll see what we can do to give you a hand.
Monty Posted February 1, 2012 #4 Posted February 1, 2012 Read this... http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/parts1.htm#wp1364800
Monty Posted February 1, 2012 #5 Posted February 1, 2012 Looks like you have to have 4 (1gb) memory sticks. I think each slot only supports 1gb. http://www.memorystock.com/memory/DellDimensionE510.html
flb_78 Posted February 1, 2012 #6 Posted February 1, 2012 Do you have a link to your ebay auction so we can see what memory you bought?
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2012 #7 Posted February 1, 2012 Does this look like what you bought? http://www.memory4less.com/images/products/HYMP512U64P8-E3-i-lg.jpg Its been a long time for me but make sure the locks on both ends snap in place. And try using one stick, boot up, then the other stick, and boot up...just to eliminate that one might be bad but not both.
Monty Posted February 1, 2012 #8 Posted February 1, 2012 Ok, Crucial says you can use (2) 2gb sticks. http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=108af860a5ca7304&cpe=us_nextag&zmap=ct1278833&zmac=43&zmas=1&zmam=13262493 Now, they DON'T always go in next to each other. You should have two different colors. 2 slots are usually one color, and 2 slots of another color. Make sure they are in the same colored slots, and make SURE you are using slot 1.
oldgoat Posted February 1, 2012 Author #10 Posted February 1, 2012 ok my computer has 2 white slots and 2 black slots. the ones that where in this where not next to each other. but both where in the white slots. i pulled them out and snapped the new ones in. the white slots. thinking i can bring the computer up to 2 gb of ram? each stick is 1gb? when i turned on the computer it went nuts. just beep beep and nothing ? monitor wold not come on. nothing? after removing these and reinstalling the old ones im up and running again? but 512mb of ram is pretty low. i will see if i can figure out how to put the link up of the ebay item?
flb_78 Posted February 1, 2012 #12 Posted February 1, 2012 Right off Dell's site for you puter. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/parta126.jpg
oldgoat Posted February 1, 2012 Author #13 Posted February 1, 2012 2GB Dell DIMENSION E310 E510 E520 E521 4700 RAM Memory (300593514228) these are the ones. i just got a reply from the seller with step by step instructions and it looks like an ID10T error LOL
flb_78 Posted February 1, 2012 #14 Posted February 1, 2012 You're braver than me buying RAM with no specs listed. Different types of RAM will fit, but some are much slower than others. There's nothing saying what kind of RAM it is, just that "it fits".
oldgoat Posted February 1, 2012 Author #15 Posted February 1, 2012 yep i could have been suckerd? i was trying to go the cheap route and it could come up to bite me in the arse?
Monty Posted February 1, 2012 #16 Posted February 1, 2012 Sorry, I was thinking you said (2) 2gb sticks. My bad...id10t error here also.
oldgoat Posted February 1, 2012 Author #18 Posted February 1, 2012 its ok they said test it one slot at a time turn off computer remove that one that worked try the other. ect ect them place in the 2 white slots if they test good and do not put the 512 in with the 2gb? i will try this tomorrow. right now im in no mood to play with electronis LOL
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2012 #19 Posted February 1, 2012 I found this chart and I wonder if the 'bus type' is correct. Or if it even matters. I dont know. http://www.memory4less.com/ConfItems.aspx?ref=mem&modelid=80016259 I mean, is it a Greyhound or Continental?
oldgoat Posted February 1, 2012 Author #20 Posted February 1, 2012 its working:cool10: my 14 year old great niece came over. pulled out the old 512 installed one gb of ram turned on the computer and it booted up. shut down the computer uninstalled that ram. place the other one in that slot and it worked. so after some pizza it was dinner time she installed both 1 gb of ram sticks in the white slots. and presto. i now have 2gb of ram and this old beast is running great. now im not sure if 2gb will work for windows 7 i now have xp professional? but like they say if it aint broke dont fix it:no-no-no: im running faster and my games load faster so im happy:cool10: till my birthday comes in august. daughter said she will buy me a new one if im a good boy LOL,, i wold rather have the bike running better but im not going to turn down that offer.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2012 #21 Posted February 1, 2012 Glad she got it going.......maybe her smaller hands helped? Sometimes its a bit tricky getting in that cramped area. Now forget that windows stuff and load Linux on it ...then it will be a screamer!
flb_78 Posted February 1, 2012 #22 Posted February 1, 2012 You claim your computer is old, but it's newer than my desktop and my laptop. Unless you're doing some serious gaming or other heavy usage, your computer should be fine for web surfing and most games. Your best bet would be to put a video card in it and then the other 2 gig of memory.
