Dumb question, but really ned help

I am helping a friend get his 1986 Yamaha Venture up and running again. It's been sitting for 2 1/5 years.

I need to remove the seat and for the life of me I cannot figure out how. It's embarassing but I just can't figure it out.

There should be a bolt on each side under the passenger seat that come out then you can remove the seat.

Remove the saddle bags, there is a 12mm bolt on each side in somewhat of a slotted opening in seat frame. They do not stick out, you gotta get down and look in to see them. Remove & seat will slide rearward & out.

I think when Dingy said "Remove the saddle bags," he means just he lids then you will see the slotted hole and can slide a socket with an extension for removal.

You are correct, I have a Classsic Venture and the bags need to be removed on the MKI.

 

One of the few pieces on it that is still from the 83, as it was born.

If it's and '86 you only need remove the saddlebag lids to access the seat bolts.
