Got 2 machines with vista myself, have put it on a few more, I sort of like it. I would say shut some of the extras down, and you'll see the difference. Vista basic is junk. Premium or ulitamite is the way to go. I have a tip sheet that may help attached.

geek squad couldn't make it load and finally determined the hard drive won't run xp.

Most of them on the Geek Squad couldn't find their butt with both hands and a flashlight.

Use Fdisk to delete ALL partitions then boot from the XP cd and install XP. You will lose EVERYTHING on the drive using this procedure.

You will also need all the device drivers for your system ahead of time. If your using SCSI Hd's you will need the drivers to install XP period as the sytem won't see the Hd's without the SCSI driver loaded at boot.

I had wanted to upgrade. I have been running XP since it first came out but Vista scared me so we just got an IMac. I work on Bill Gates plane sometimes but I got tired of paying for it buying all that software and putting up with the trouble.

Hey Juggler, if you are wanting to move away from Windows, you might want to check out PCLinuxOS on your desktop. Nice! Fast, stable, pretty.....and FREE! If you don't like it, then you can still spend your money on a MAC.

I've used so many various Linux flavors it ain't funny. I've tried most of them at one time or another. I run 3 versions currently. Slackware, Centos and FreeBSD. Ok, the last isn't Linux but it is a *nix. Mac OS X is by far and away the best end user *nix OS ever made.

Everyone i have talked to says it is junk, so i stay away.............One of my coworkers found someone that told him that the antivirus that came with the machine was not up to the task and to shut it down.

I know it can't be that simple; but it worked for him. at least he could use his mp3 player now,

I'll be sticking W/ XP pro.

WHAT! The main reason I changed from w/98 to this new one was so my kids could use thier mp3/dig camera and so on. I can't ever get the Media Player to work on this thing. When I put in a cd I get a errror message that the file had been moved, deleted, or renamed. Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Have Vista on one PC and XP on two others at home. Gotta say, I HATE Vista. Maybe it just because it is different, but just cannot get used to it and the performance. Will probably move to XP, but just do not have the time right now.

Yes,

I'm using Vista since a couple of days.

Performance is not an issue (But I have 2 GB of memory).

But software compatibility with old applications is a mess.

Wife bought me an 17" HP Laptop that came with Vista but have to wait till "Geek Squad" comes to hook it up to Internet and other computer. For the price she paid there isn't much on it as everything has a 60 day trial version installed. Sucks. She figured I would like it cause I could take it with me(a little big to go in trunk/ but not impossible). Will see how it works but sounds like it may be a problem like others.

I've just recently been sent a new Dell desktop by way of a very dear friend after the motherboard "smoked" on my last unit. He ordered it with XP Pro directly from Dell since all the research he had done indicated endless unresolved problems with Vista.

Interestingly, I have a 12 year-old Mac that I still use that is way more user-friendly than any PC I've ever owned...

[rant]It really frustrates me that people expect pain when they buy a new computer. You shouldn't have to wait for the geek squad to get online! It seems as if the "support" community has taught us to expect to rely on them to get things done.[/rant]

You owe it to your self to try out a Mac, they just work.

I have heard a few people going back to XP as the improvements in Vista did not seem worth the price of the upgrade, too bad.

Maybe this will explain Vista's problems.
