dingy Posted January 18, 2012 #3 Posted January 18, 2012 Looking for a MKII starter motor as i believe they have 4 brushes instead of the stock two in 83. thank you very much -CJ None of the 1st gen starters are 4 brush. Only the RSV's & VMax's newer than 1993. Attached picture shows how to tell difference from outside. A 2 brush starter has 4 screws around the center line which hold coils in place. 4 brush starter do not have these screws as coils are epoxied in place. Bottom starter (4 brush) has armature out of it in picture. Gary
rstacy Posted January 19, 2012 #4 Posted January 19, 2012 I recently went with the 4 brush starter on my Gen1. I got it off of Ebay for $45.00 Its not that it is hard to change but you have to take a lot of stuff off. It was well worth it!
PeteVS Posted January 19, 2012 #5 Posted January 19, 2012 Pinwall cycle parts, Ebay store has a number of VRS starters all at $59.95 plis shipping. Some look fairly clean and come from lower mileage rides others look as if they sat in mud for the past decade. Ebay for $45 was a great price, maybe another will come along if you can wait.
