CaptainJoe Posted January 17, 2012 #1 Posted January 17, 2012 Dont see anything in the Favorite Roads and Destinations for Florida? On Way back from the keys in March, I am thinking about talking Rt 27 on 3/30-31/2012. Took the southern leg of 27 a couple years ago then jogged east of lake okechobee. Was 2nd week of June and the love bugs were terrible. 1. When is love bug season (there are 2?) 2. Would like to do the west side on this trip... Anyone travel it from start to finnish?
M61A1MECH Posted January 17, 2012 #2 Posted January 17, 2012 They normally come out in the April-May and August -September time frames. 27 is a pretty boring ride, 4 lane all the way and when you get further north near Clermont there are lots of old folks and their parents around there you really need to watch them close.
Brake Pad Posted January 18, 2012 #3 Posted January 18, 2012 27 continues up into lower central Georgia, then turns south again, then stops. Best to come up Krome Avenue out of Key largo, follow up to 27, this way you stay out of Miami. 27 up to South Bay, Is just completely boring ( south bay, Clewiston and Moore haven are speed traps ) after that its 55 and 65 MPH up to sebring 27 is nice after that, but don't plan to make any time following this route. KarlS Posted January 18, 2012 #4 Posted January 18, 2012 Have you ever tried this web site. http://www.motorcycleroads.us/ I've planed many a trip including roads from this web site.
CaptainJoe Posted January 18, 2012 Author #5 Posted January 18, 2012 "Have you ever tried this web site." Yup.... been looking at it for the last couple of days... Still haven't found a legend as to what the green and blue colors mean. Rt 27 is green from Miami to above Lake okechobee? Thats why I asked here. M61A1MECH, Brakepad both said it was a boring ride... Better to get first hand info from people that have actually ridden it. I rode the eastern portion and there were a couple of spots around the Lake O. that was scenic... Think if were gonna do anything Scenic its gonna have to be north of Orlando... Might come up the west coast and cut across middle of florida on the way back... Thanks Guys...
KarlS Posted January 18, 2012 #6 Posted January 18, 2012 Descriptive icons and a color coding system (red = twisty, blue = sweepers, green = scenic, and brown = unpaved) On home page towards the top under We Offer:
CaptainJoe Posted January 18, 2012 Author #7 Posted January 18, 2012 Karls, Well now...that's what I get for clicking on florida before readng entire page...LOL Thanks Joe
leo3wheel Posted January 18, 2012 #8 Posted January 18, 2012 Descriptive icons and a color coding system (red = twisty, blue = sweepers, green = scenic, and brown = unpaved) I vote no brown........
CaptainJoe Posted January 18, 2012 Author #9 Posted January 18, 2012 Don't worry street tires and gravel roads aren't the best combination... not to mention the dust kicked up for the people bringing up the rear...
dynodon Posted January 18, 2012 #10 Posted January 18, 2012 If you have already done the East side of Florida, why not try the West side? Take 41 across, be sure to take a left on 29 to Everglades City to the Rod and Gun club for lunch or supper. Then take 29 north to Ave Maria (just off 29 a few miles to the West), the new Catholic community. Not Catholic? Neither am I, but the wife and I enjoyed the town square (around an amazing looking cathedral) with some good restaurants and the best smoothie I have ever had, plus some neat shopping. The community is open to visitors and beautiful to ride around in. Then go back to 29 and go to Immokalee. Ride some of the "800" roads east and North to Lake Okeechobee and stop at the dam/park on the south end. Then you can continue on 27 North, it gets busier the farthur North you go so don't hesitate to get off on the side roads. I have found those roads are clean and smooth and more fun than the main roads. This little Western detour is one the wife and I did over a couple days a couple years ago. If going on North, taking 41 or 19 up the West coast is a nice ride. Just explore!
CaptainJoe Posted January 18, 2012 Author #11 Posted January 18, 2012 i took 41 west side bout 6 years ago.. remember a lot of stop lights in places(around and north of Napels), but it was good road. Might do a (41, 75, 17, 27) or (41, 75, 41 scenic spots and return to 75) till I hit some of the scenic roads north of Orlando. Although 29 does take you to 27...Hummm. On the down side, 41 last time i rode it, was almost completly void of life... couple of swamp boat rides and an unattended visitors center, not to mention the Love Bugs...LOL. Guess what i need to do is find the Best motorcycle roads in florida and go from there. They just seem to be centralized around Orlando area? Thanks Joe
