dingy Posted January 17, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2012 I am trying to get Outlook 2010 trial version set up so I can transfer my old email & contacts to Thunderbird. I have outlook running, Windows 7 Pro version, Avast Internet virus software. I can get to the point where it is sending test mail, but then it just sits there. I have tried shutting down avast & explorer firewall, but no change. Screen shots attached below. Any suggestions? Gary

Gary there are a few settings on the first page that may be incorrect, but You should check with your ISP as you may have a pop3 account not an IMAP Account, and while the incoming mail settings look ok, the outgoing mail is usually smtp.yourmailserver or whatever the ISP sets up. ragtop69gs Posted January 17, 2012 Share #3 Posted January 17, 2012 I agree with Brian. Your outgoing mail server setting is wrong. Account type could be wrong also. Fix that and it should go.
dingy Posted January 17, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted January 17, 2012 Link below is setup page from hover.com https://www.hover.com/help/setup-your-hover-email It does indicate the mail.hover.com in both in & out. CaptainJoe Posted January 17, 2012 Share #5 Posted January 17, 2012 before I had multiple computers I went thru like 6 screens and did screen prints of the settings for Outlook express... that way ther's no guessing. Now I just carry my laptop to wherever, and scrool thru the screens.
SilvrT Posted January 17, 2012 Share #6 Posted January 17, 2012 The 2 things I can se that may be incorrect is... 1. IMAP on the 1st screen. Generally this is SMTP 2. Authentication on the 2nd page. Generally not required for SMTP. Change these two settings and see what happens.
StormRaven Posted January 17, 2012 Share #7 Posted January 17, 2012 The only visible discrepancy I can see between your screen shots and the tutorial screens from Hover: You didn't enable the SSL Encryption in screen 3 for both incoming and outgoing. Ports are correct, servers are correct, including the IMAP setting. Enable encryption and you should be good to go, provided you're entering the correct password. Guest tx2sturgis Posted January 17, 2012 Share #8 Posted January 17, 2012 (edited) Dingy stated he's trying to get OLD mail into Thunderbird. Is that right Dingy? If so: On the Mac, Thunderbird has an 'import wizard' for importing existing mail and contacts from other mail clients on the same computer. I assume it has this capability under Windows. If the computer you are using already has existing messages and contacts in a current mail client, this might be the way to go. OTOH: If your trying to grab old messages and contacts from an online webmail host, then maybe that webmail host has some type of export/archive setting as well. (yahoo and gmail do) If your last email program had a setting that deleted all existing mail on the server, then there may be nothing to 'grab'. Of course you will still need to get Thunderbird to play nice with your mail host. Edited January 17, 2012 by tx2sturgis
albyzee Posted January 17, 2012 Share #9 Posted January 17, 2012 I believe it's the account login name. Is your mailname "gary"? Try taking off from the @ etc.
dingy Posted January 18, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted January 18, 2012 Finally working. There was an IMAP setup button, that the providers site did not say to use . Ran that and it auto setup with different ports than what providers site showed. Thanks for all the suggestions. Most of which I just tried.
