I would also assume that a washing machine cycle may have just slightly more agitation and chemicals than a glass of clean water.

 

The technology for water proofing electronics is cheap, easy and has been around for more than 40 years. I think the phone manufacturers are just giddy that there have been over 85 million phones destroyed by being dropped in the drink. Why would they want to end the gravy train?
