Cruise Control Install on 83 Royale

I recently picked up 2 identical gold Venture 1200's for $1000. I was pretty excited with my purchase since only 1 thing that was wrong really caught my eye. Neither of them have the cruise control like my 85 1200 did. I was wondering if it would be possible to get the necessary parts from a newer venture, or even buy the royale star venture cruise to modify to work for my bike. I have a spare wiring harness that was designed for the CB but i do not know if it has the correct plug for the cruise control. Any information or if anyone has done this and could lend me some advice would be much appreciated!!!

This is not a real easy thing to do. But if you have the wiring harness it is a start.

 

This was the first thing I started on when I began surgery on my 83 VenMax.

 

And really I use the cruise very little. It is a lot of time & resources for your first big rehab of the bike. You would get a lot more bang for your buck with reworking front end with progressive springs & MKII brakes. These are useful every mile your on the bike.

 

I have some of these items as spares.

 

Here is list of things that need to be changed from the 83 to a 86 -93 with cruise:

 

Front brake master switch

Clutch master switch

Rear brake master switch

Throttle cables & junction box

Throttle side start switch housing

Instrument cluster - complete

Bezel that surrounds key switch

Wiring harness

 

You need to add following:

 

Cruise vacuum pump

Cruise diaphragm unit

Cruise controller module

I'm not an expert on this but I wonder if the cruise will work right with the vacuum advance being 180 degrees out of phase from the rest of the years. The '84 and '85 had cruise as well but the on indicator light was on the dashboard. That should be no biggie though, any light bulb mounted anywhere should do for that but did the '83 have the reed switch for speed on the dash? I think the cruise parts are the same for all, just a different connector on the MK2 and the vacuum diaphragm mounts different. Mine is just dangling at the moment as I changed my fairing subframe to a MK2 for the headlight conversion...

Vacuum does not come from the TCI pickup. The cruise has a separate vacuum pump. The vacuum is not actually 180 degs out on the motor, only the pickup point for the TCI is above the butterfly's. This is 'ported' vacuum and it is 180 degs out from normal manifold vacuum readings.

 

All 1st gens have the reed switch in the cluster, it is also used for the turn signal self cancel circuit.

 

It would depend on what wiring harness he has as to if a MKI cruise could be used. It would be somewhat easier. It may not require cluster or key bezel change.

Before going to all the trouble of fitting cruise there are a number of considerations ...

 

Firstly, there are plenty of bikes out there with it already fitted, and it's a pretty big job with zero resale value. If you love your bike and want to keep it, then go ahead. If you are prepared to sell it you could buy another with the upgrades already on board.

 

Secondly .... My '86 has cruise control, and it generally works just fine. It doesn't work as well as on a fuel injected bike, but that is the nature of vacuum operated cruise.

 

The thing is .... I don't actually use it very much. Even on 1000+ mile days I use it only intermittently. I know I could easily get by with a simple throttle lock if I really wanted to.

 

Don't get me wrong. I have it, it works and I use it. I don't use it nearly as much as I do in the car and if I had to source and fit all the parts I would be wondering if it were worth it.
