TEW47 Posted December 27, 2007 #1 Posted December 27, 2007 Has anyone ever tried wearing a down filled jacket under their riding jacket? I might try it if it ever gets cold enought here. Pros and cons. My jacket is a little large, I like it like that. tew47
86er Posted December 27, 2007 #2 Posted December 27, 2007 Any time that I'm going to be riding at temps below 25/30 degrees, I ride with a down vest under my leather jacket. The vest has a turtle neck on it that zips up. I put that under my helmet strap. I've ridden down to less than 10 degrees that way. With good gloves and face cover (Either face shield or neoprene mask) I stay toasty warm. I've left here (Atl) in the 20s at 5 am headed to my parents in Venice, Fl and have to start shedding stuff around Gainesville.
davecb Posted December 27, 2007 #3 Posted December 27, 2007 Get a snowmobile suit if ya really wanna be warm....May not be stylish....but ya aren't freezin your buns of.....
MikeM8560 Posted December 27, 2007 #4 Posted December 27, 2007 Jackets? We dont need to stinkin' jackets
plainmd Posted December 27, 2007 #5 Posted December 27, 2007 I also use a snowmobile suit to keep me warm......I have the bibs and jacket combo so i can shed clothes when it warms up...
Marcarl Posted December 27, 2007 #6 Posted December 27, 2007 You guys must have it drier down there. I've tried the snomoble suit thing but near half froze to death at 28F.
loehring Posted December 27, 2007 #7 Posted December 27, 2007 Layers..... it's all about layers. I have an electric liner that I wear under my leather jacket. That holds me until I get to the 20s. Then I encase it all in a riding suit. (It's the same as a snowmobile suit. Just a different name) That will take me to single digits. My gloves are electric too. The only trouble spot is my toes. Maybe next year I'll get the electric sox. :lightbulb:When it's 10 degrees out there I really don't care what I look like as long as I'm warm.

The warmth comes from the trapped dead air in the down. Cold will penetrate thru seams unless the vest is built with baffles. Down doesn't have a lot of insulating ability when compressed.

Yeah, me too but I think the snowmobile is a warmer machine then the motorcycle. At least the older ones were, cira 1980's. I also find the snowmobile suit to be a bit slick on the vinyl seat. I don't ride below 40 deg F and that's not very often. Jerry
Thom Posted December 28, 2007 #10 Posted December 28, 2007 Jackets? We dont need to stinkin' jackets what do you mean we don't need jackets ' it was freezing this morning had to wear 2 coats and leathers goin to work today !! i need heated gloves bad !!! it was all the way done to 56 , and that is cold!!! but it warmed upto 79 today , glad i dressed in layers :rasberry:
steinbjg Posted December 28, 2007 #11 Posted December 28, 2007 I dress in layers, If it is under 50 degrees I wear a Gerbing heated jacket under my leather coat. Under 40 degrees I turn it on. Don't ride under 35 degrees, to much chance for ice.
Poledar Posted December 28, 2007 #12 Posted December 28, 2007 If anyone is looking, I have a wiring harness and a women's medium vest for a reasonable price.
