oldgoat Posted December 19, 2011 #1 Posted December 19, 2011 (edited) well as some know on here i go up and do some work at the homeless shelter. i handed out hats and gloves today with the other staff members there. i did not stay for dinner. but here is how my day ended i met a nice gentleman by the name of steve olson. he is veteran from the vietnam war. he is homeless. well i been talking to steve for a long time. and got to know him as much as he was willing to share with me. he tould me how he got divorced and hard times fell on him. he left his only child behind when she was 17. he never made any type of contact with her since then. he said he,s to ashamed. so i asked him what her name was? i was surprised he told me. well last night i took a chance and looked on face book for a karen olson from dayton Ohio area i found 3 and then i sent out a message to the 3 of them asking if i may ask if they have a dad named steve? well i got an answer from a nice woman in her mid 30,s that said yes she did have a father by that name. but thinks he passed away? as she has not seen or heard from him in years. i said this might shock you but i think i know where your father is? and i went on to describe him. she was all excited and asked if he was ok? i said yes as much as i can tell hes ok. he stops in at the homeless shelter every night here. she said she realy would like to see him. so she is headed up here friday. and asked if we can make sure he does not know. and that he stays in the area. i think steve is finaly going to go home. PBJ Posted December 20, 2011 #12 Posted December 20, 2011 I remember when you fell on hard times too last year. When those things happen we never know why. But looking at this amazing thing you did for this father and daughter. even if their visit is only for a few hours and least she has an idea that her father is still alive, and they may be able to re unite even if its for only a little while. The indians say there are no coincidences all things happen for a reason.
mini-muffin Posted December 20, 2011 #13 Posted December 20, 2011 I always believe things happen for a reason. People come into our lives when they need us or we need them. This is a great Christmas story hope all works out for them both. Merry Christmas! Margaret
Aussie Annie Posted December 20, 2011 #14 Posted December 20, 2011 You were able to give the true joy of Christmas to Steve's daughter. She gets her Dad for Christmas!! Don't get any better than that. You "paid it forward" James

oldgoat Posted December 29, 2011 Author #18 Posted December 29, 2011 there are talking. he was verry happy to see her. right now he is not ready to go back ? he has a few things he wants and needs to take care of here first? she did put him up in a motel here that rents by the month. he said he will head back sometime in febuary 2012. he just needs time to let this all sink in. he said he loved what i did for him. i gave him a part of his life back. and hes gratefull. he needs to get his teeth from the veterans center. they pulled all of them because he is homeless and right now hes waiting for the dentures. then his SSDI came through and n he will have some back pay. and a monthly check:cool10:. then he will seek low income housing . and be near his daughter. sad to say his ex wife passed away. so there is some sorrow and some happiness to all of this. and im glad i was a part in all of it. now i need to follow some advice from a great person on this site. that said i have a verry big heart but need to take care of my self . so im going to follow that advice.. and you know who you are ? im not ready for shades but maybe just maybe my future is going to be brighter this year?
P-roy Posted December 29, 2011 #19 Posted December 29, 2011 Awesome story, and awesome act of kindness. More people should spend their time doing for and helping others. Just the kind of thing to lift a persons day. Thanks for all you did.
playboy Posted December 30, 2011 #21 Posted December 30, 2011 Awesome story glad it worked out thanks for the update.
Pegasus1300 Posted December 30, 2011 #22 Posted December 30, 2011 Ripples on the water ripples on the water. They go out and out and out and you never know where they will stop or who or what they will touch or set in motion. You may never know all the effects of this act of kindness either on others or yourself but it is a good thing and thanx for sharing.
dacheedah Posted December 30, 2011 #23 Posted December 30, 2011 The VA has some good programs for homeless vets, the hard part is making them follow through on their end. U done good work and we have him in our prayers. . .

oldgoat Posted January 3, 2012 Author #25 Posted January 3, 2012 steve and his daughter are realy working on this. steve said he talks to her every night when she gets off of work she calls him and talks for an hour. he has his teeth now. and his back pay for SSDI came in today. he is going to send it to her. so she can find him a place to live.. his goal is to head back on febuary 5th 2012. he is looking good. put on some weight. has a smile on his face. and a swagger to his walk. i can say i think this man is on a long and happy journey in his life. im not much of a motorcycle mechanic. but i was able to work on his 1982 ford f150 truck. so it will be ready to take him on his way. we bleed the brakes. and installed some brake pads. last week when it was still warm out. all is good put the truck pulls a little to the left? might be a bad rotor. but we had to go with what we had? once he gets back to ohio. it will be sold. it has 239000 miles on it. runs ok. but needs a little TLC. has a camper on it and its full clear to the top with who knows what:rotf: but i got a friend or 2 out of this. and that makes my day.
