reddevilmedic Posted November 24, 2011 #1 Posted November 24, 2011 has anyone tried mounting ammo cans to first gen? saw some on ebay for flares! big cans! i asked the seller to weigh them.
MiCarl Posted November 24, 2011 #2 Posted November 24, 2011 If they're big (and I assume they are) you might have to worry about the lids hitting the trunk. Pretty sure they would on a MKII.
a1bummer Posted November 24, 2011 #3 Posted November 24, 2011 Good idea for an off road or dual sport bike, but I don't think they would look very slick on a 1st gen. But each to his own and I'm sure you could make it work one way or another. Just out of curiosity, why ammo boxes and not original equipment? Bill
reddevilmedic Posted November 24, 2011 Author #4 Posted November 24, 2011 well, the sure size of these make for more ability to tour. the stock bags just dont compare. they are big, and i would have to move, or build the turn signals into them. 19x14.5x10. i have a pelican box i can mount to the top with a little manufacturing. just an idea. i can paint the cans to match the bike.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted November 24, 2011 #5 Posted November 24, 2011 (edited) If I was going for the european adventure pannier look for very low bucks, I'd be looking at a couple of aluminum tool or equipment cases...light weight and not expensive at all. http://www.casesbysource.com/img/cache/variation/BL1493375_319_.jpg Or maybe a pair of Pelican cases. You can get waterproof Pelican cases that might do the job: http://www.casesbysource.com/img/cache/variation/PC-1430_F1375_319_.jpg Those larger metal ammo cans are pretty heavy, and most have some rather firm edges and corners that might take out a kneecap. http://www.casesbysource.com/ Edited November 24, 2011 by tx2sturgis
reddevilmedic Posted November 24, 2011 Author #6 Posted November 24, 2011 yep, considered side pelicans. still going for high dollar on ebay. there is a top loading pelican in desert tan that might work. model 1430. found those for about 80. not quite as big. the seller of the ammo cans wrote me, and said they weigh 14lbs each. how much does a factory case weigh? i dont have a scale. can anyoneone tell me by the measurements i posted, what the capacity of the ammo cans are?
RandyR Posted November 24, 2011 #7 Posted November 24, 2011 (edited) 19x14.5x10 = 2755 cubic inches = 47.7 liquid quarts = 12 gallons I'm thinking about adding some ammo cans to the sides of my Suzuki DR200. But I would use cans about 4 gallons each which I have. http://randyrick.us/motorcycles/Suzuki/2009_0724Dr200inMud0004sm.JPG Edited November 24, 2011 by RandyR
reddevilmedic Posted November 24, 2011 Author #8 Posted November 24, 2011 24 gallons!? ha! thats more than the victory cross country! now i have to do it! besides, i can weld up some brackets to the ammo cans. maybe use a light bar for flashers, and put reflective tape on back of them. and oh, mount some liter fuel bottles to them. thing i might have something here....probably just a migraine! cool zuki.
