Guest tx2sturgis Posted November 21, 2011 #26 Posted November 21, 2011 (edited) I think the problem is either software, hardware or both. Buy a Mac. ;-) Hey if its 5 years old open the case and look carefully at all the heatsinks and fans, make sure the heatsinks are clean, if not clean them, and make sure all the fans are running. I have seen some desktops that get pretty grimy inside, especially if someone in the house smokes, and the heat buildup can cause things to slow down, lock up, or just act weird, as if there is a virus. And by the way, you MAY have some type of virus or other malware in there, bogging things down. Many of these IT guys and gals can use a remote program to get in there and debug things. I'll shut up and let the winders folks resume guessing too. Edited November 21, 2011 by tx2sturgis

I've been running Trend virus checker and firewall for 15 years. Ever since I final got a virus. They did a free scan and found not one but two of those buggers. Back then they gave me very good directions to manually get rid of them. Saved my A$$, and been with them ever since. Now days they will scan and clean without having to do a thing. I also run Advanced System Care to keep things debugged and tweeked. I was going to bid on an IMac G4 laptop this morning but the bidding got carried away, and I didn't know that much about the G4, so bailed on the bidding. The size would have been great to take on the scoot. I tried to do a little investigating online, but the prices were all over the place, and when I saw the memory at 128 meg and RAM at 128 I thought it probably was an earlier model?? Maybe not but like I said???.....
GAWildKat Posted November 21, 2011 #28 Posted November 21, 2011 Trend is good stuff. Also try: CCleaner: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html A different antivirus I like as well is Avast! http://www.avast.com/en-us/index All of these programs are free but ask for donations. Also another program you can try is peerblock http://www.peerblock.com/releases It's mostly for people who pirate software, but it can be used to block other computers on the net from seeing your computer and attempting to piggyback on your account via your computer. Do not enable HTTP blocking, otherwise you'll be cursing why you can't see this site or others.
BuddyRich Posted November 21, 2011 #29 Posted November 21, 2011 5 years in computer life, Jack, You got enough first gens. Toss the old Dell and get an something in this computer century.
Michael_Bishop Posted November 21, 2011 #30 Posted November 21, 2011 One thing I have to do every so often for some reason if my internet slows down. I shut the computer down. Then I pull the power plug on the cable modem and the router and let them set for a few minutes. Then I plug the modem power cable in and wait till I get the one light on. Then I plug power back into router them boot the computer.
SilvrT Posted November 21, 2011 #31 Posted November 21, 2011 We whine and complain when our internet pages aren't loading as fast as we think they should ... but I can remember whining about the slowness of my 300 baud modem and replacing it with a 1200 baud .... which was blazing fast... for a while... and then I was whining about it... which soon got replaced with a 2400 baud.... some things change... others don't LOL
GAWildKat Posted November 21, 2011 #32 Posted November 21, 2011 Oh, I remember the days....mostly I complained about all the disconnects and my Dad picking UP the phone to get me to go to bed (yes, I'm a net addict) I started out with a 9600 baud and eventually got 56k, cable, dsl, ISDN were for the rich 15 yrs ago. Now Cable/DSL is the standard....
BuddyRich Posted November 21, 2011 #33 Posted November 21, 2011 Yep, You could read it as it typed across the screen. It took all night to partition a 40mb hard drive....

Guest tx2sturgis Posted November 21, 2011 #35 Posted November 21, 2011 (edited) Hey my very first (and only) BBS ran on a Tandy 1000 TL, (IBM PC XT compatible) with 2 floppies! I think my first HDD was 20 meg...and it was hundreds of dollars. The Pacer BBS (as I called it) ran on a 2400 baud on-board modem and then I added an external Zoom 9600, with 2 phone lines! I remember the first time I saw LIVE...2 users logged in and I jumped in and tested out the sysop 'chat' function.... with text2speech running it was so cool. It felt like being on the bridge of the Enterprise! Operated it for a few years and then something happened. The other BBS operator in this little town called and said he was now selling internet to people. What? I said, ok...have fun with that. Well in a few years he made enough money to buy an airplane! Shoulda, coulda, woulda.. Ok...geek mode off. Edited November 21, 2011 by tx2sturgis
Freebird Posted November 21, 2011 #36 Posted November 21, 2011 Well, my first computer was a TI 99/4A. It had no modem at all. It also had no hard drive and in fact, had no floppy drives. It used a standard cassette deck for storage. I thought I was living big when I got my first computer that actually had a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive and then I eventually added a SECOND floppy drive...man....that was something to behold. My first hard drive was also a 20MB. My first modem though was 2400 baud. My first laptop was a Compaq 286 LTE...I think was the model. The company bought it for me and it had a monochrome display, 9600 baud modem, I think a 30 MB drive and a 3 1/2" floppy drive. It came at a cost of right at $6,000.00. It ran MSDOS. The main thing that I used it for was PLC programming using Allen Bradley software.
GAWildKat Posted November 22, 2011 #37 Posted November 22, 2011 Wow Freebird you were movin on up there! My 1st computer was an IBM PS/1 with a 130MB hard drive, 3.5 inch floppy drive, cdrom and win 3.1 think the modem was 9600 baud. Cost my parents $1400. (I was in college then) My next computer was a packard bell pent 1 100mhz with all the bells and whistles, even had a 28.8 modem! It was my favorite computer too. Now I have 2, a laptop that I think is rather awesome, and a desktop that is too, but needs upgrading. All in all I think tech came a long ways.
Condor Posted November 22, 2011 Author #38 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) Ha!! I didn't own it, but I ran it... My first computor 'experience' was running a Buroughs 220 back in '62-'65 for Allstate Ins Co regional in Pasadena Ca. Everything was on r/w 1" tape drives with punch card input. 10K of memory. It was tubed and it sat in a 20'x30' room with a sub floor that allowed space for the A/C to keep things cool and stable, and I sat in it. Fixed address, bianary. Gawd those were the days.... Aussie Annie Posted November 22, 2011 #39 Posted November 22, 2011 Hey, I thought we spoke English on here?
GolfVenture Posted November 22, 2011 #40 Posted November 22, 2011 My 1st computer was a Radio Shack Color Computer 4K. I actually wrote an accounting system for an independent trucker hauling logs. It used a cassette for input and data storage. It did monthly, quarterly, and yearly statements. Then I moved up to a Tandy Model III with 48K and two 5 1/4 floppys. Years later I got a Gateway 486 DX2 66. And I still have all the hardware and software. They all work except the Gateway won't boot up. Another one of my projects is to get that Gateway up and running. I designed/coded in Paradox an employee database then interfaced it with an org chart software automatically creating org charts. I decided that after Windows 95 that I wanted a life and so pretty much no longer stayed technical with the Windows Operating System. Today I like my life simplier and just a user these days.
Freebird Posted November 22, 2011 #41 Posted November 22, 2011 We've come a long way since then. It's been several years since I've even owned a desktop. My laptop does everything that I need it to do. What are you running now? Here is my present system. All at a small fraction of the cost of that first Compaq 286 LTE. Dell Vostro 3750 2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz 6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHZ, 2 DIMM 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M (128-bit), 1GB Graphics 17.3 inch High Definition LED Display (1600 X 900) with anti-glare Intel WiFi 1030 802.11 b/g/n/BT3.0 Combo 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+/-R write capability Fingerprint Reader with Digital Persona software Backlit Keyboard with Gesture Touchpad Integrated HD Webcam and Digital Array Mic with Dell Webcam Central Genuine Windows® 7 Professional, 64bit
BuddyRich Posted November 22, 2011 #42 Posted November 22, 2011 I'm have a desktop and a laptop and a galaxy tab 10.1. The laptop is an HP touchscreen 12 inch about 4 years old The desktop is Asus Crosshair V with AMD FX-8120 8 core @ 3.1Ghz 8 GB Ram ATI Radeon 6970 with Three 24inch monitors 2 Kingston 120gb SSD sata 6gb/s drives in a Raid 0 array 2 Seagate 1 TB Hd's in a Raid 0 array SoundBlaster X-Fi Windows 7 Pro 64bit Yea, about 25% of what they cost 15 years ago.
Monty Posted November 22, 2011 #43 Posted November 22, 2011 Well, I built this desktop about 5 years ago, and it does great, but it's time to build a new one. Starting my new build this week. This machine... AMD XP 4000+ processor 2.1ghz 2gb DDR2 memory, I think 800mhz Nvidia Geforce 7800GS 256mb AGP video card HT Omega 7.1 surround sound card 500 gb hard drive 24" Acer monitor 1 DVD burner & 1 DVD ROM 550w power supply Windows XP SP3 My new one will have... Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support ... HITACHI HDS721050CLA362 (0F10381) 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Possibly going to add a 60gb SSD drive also. 42" 1080P monitor. Windows 7 Home Premium This will be my 1st Intel build. I have always used, and had good luck with AMD. I was going to wait for the bulldozer (The FX-8120 8-core), but I have seen too many bad reviews on it. I'm building for gaming, and this i5 2500k blows the bulldozer out of the water.

Eck Posted November 22, 2011 #46 Posted November 22, 2011 Here is the info on my desk top.. 10 YR old Samsung (maybe 12 yrs old) SyncMaster 570V tft 24/7 tech support doesnt support anymore 3 yr warranty has disappeared Very little drive...... period.. Does not matter if you call it hard drive or soft drive Very moody...does what it wants when it wants on its own time,,not yours. Loves to lock up when you least expecting it Plays one game very well called the "waiting game"...happens about every 2 minutes whether you want to play or not.. Wont let you highlight and copy anything anymore. Takes about two minutes to open a word document..about 4 minutes for Power point Hates PDF files... opens one up once in a while... but loves to partially open the next one and stops right there.. Plays songs real good Plays in a jerking mode on video and movie clips.. or just stops.. All this and 6 months ago I purchased another computer. When I didn't do what I was supposed to do I was placed in the corner, so this newer computer presently sits in the corner on the floor in my Bedroom. It has been there for about a month now and has been cut off of juice..and gets no attention from me at all. It most likely will remain there for a few more months for all I care until it decides to play nice. All I can say is .........Thank GOD for Black Friday...........
Freebird Posted November 22, 2011 #47 Posted November 22, 2011 Probably just dirty. Have you tried washing it with your phone?
