Cougar Posted November 16, 2011 #1 Posted November 16, 2011 So I was thinking of switching up to the Docsis 3 Technology from Docsis 2 Have any of you had to pleasure or even noticed a differance in these Docsis 3 Technology type modoms? I just switched from Fiber Optics DSL Back to Cable, I was NOT happy with the DSL at all. Very pricy for such a low download speed. The Cable company does support the newer Docsis 3 Technology now. Just wanted to hear what others thought. Thanks Jeff
Marcarl Posted November 17, 2011 #2 Posted November 17, 2011 My thoughts is that you lost me,,,,, but somebody else may claim to know something.
Sleeperhawk Posted November 17, 2011 #4 Posted November 17, 2011 Have been using the Docsis3 for about 2 weeks now. I love the upload speed (Bobbie's pics we back up on Carbonite), but the download is great if we could get the cable company to be consistent. We have had 3 techs out here in the 2 weeks and even they have not been able to figure out why the download speed is not consistent. Now I am really comtemplating ATT UVerse, same cost and speed and I have always had good luck with DSL. Now we have Uverse available, so if cable can't figure out the issue, hello ATT. Also, Far East and Europe has been running Docsis 3 for years now.
Cougar Posted November 17, 2011 Author #5 Posted November 17, 2011 So how much of an increase in download speed did you notice by just switching over to D3 ? And let me know if you switch as I might be interested in your modem if you own it *lol*
Michael_Bishop Posted November 17, 2011 #6 Posted November 17, 2011 I went with the Docsis 3 cable modem about 2 years ago with comcast. I wanted there 5 meg upload speed. I think my download is like 22 meg with that package but on speed test I get get 32 meg. it cost be $10 more a month for that 5 up and 22 down. I did not want to pay $100 a month for the 10 meg up and 50 down. I have not had any problems with it. All DOCSIS 3 is they bond channels togethere to more bandwidth. On my upload it is still 1 channel download shows 4 channels.
Cougar Posted November 17, 2011 Author #7 Posted November 17, 2011 Very Interesting.... So I am thinking a 10 to 20 meg increase (down) on what ever package that someone is running at the time. what brand did you go with ? Moto? Arris ?

Sylvester Posted November 17, 2011 #9 Posted November 17, 2011 The only post here that I understood was Marcarl everything else is HUUUUHHHH.
Cougar Posted November 17, 2011 Author #10 Posted November 17, 2011 Thats Cuz it is VERY Top Secret stuff ! Don't tell anybody!
Monty Posted November 17, 2011 #11 Posted November 17, 2011 Just remember...your download speed is only as fast as the upload speed of the site you're getting it from.
etcswjoe Posted November 17, 2011 #12 Posted November 17, 2011 Remember too if you are using cable your speeds will vary depending how many people you are sharing it with.
Cougar Posted November 17, 2011 Author #13 Posted November 17, 2011 yep and yep..... been running test the past few weeks and it has been very constant for me day and night... no drop or increase at all.
Michael_Bishop Posted November 17, 2011 #14 Posted November 17, 2011 the only reason I did it was I went for 3 meg upload to 5 meg upload. I run a video chat room server software from my home computer. That way I can have about 10 people in the room viewing cams with out lag. I figer for $10 a month 2 more meg was not bad. But has far has download it was fast enough before. Plus I can upload videos a lot faster to vimeo. But has far has going out and getting a DOCSIS 3 cable modem if your not going to upgrade the tier of speed you have now your not going to see anything different. Plus I would think if it is a new install they would put in a DOCSIS 3 modem anyway. I do know that over the years Comcast has upgraded there speeds free for people but if you had a old modem you might have to call them to swap it out to see it.
Cougar Posted November 17, 2011 Author #15 Posted November 17, 2011 yeah, there having a hard time keeping them in stock, and of course I was one of the last to get a D2 and they just started setting them up with D3 this week. just doing my home work for now. It just got me curios. I am at 12 down now. I called and even the tech said wait about 6 months or so.
RandyR Posted November 17, 2011 #16 Posted November 17, 2011 just go ahead and buy a fiber optic cable to your house.
Cougar Posted November 17, 2011 Author #17 Posted November 17, 2011 already have fiber optics right to the house , I was not impressed, Just dumped them. 6 megs down @ $70.00 per month is not cutting it with me. and it was not stable at all. my 12 meg cable for the past 3 weeks has been right on the dot. for half the price.
Cougar Posted December 20, 2011 Author #18 Posted December 20, 2011 Went with the Motorala SBV6220 Docsis 3 Modem. With VOP -- All I can say is WOW, I am impressed...:happy65:Kinda funny though. doing the speedtest.net I am not showing a huge increase in speed from there chart on there site. BUT while using it I see the speed as my pages are super fast now. really streaming nicley now. thinking I will never go back Jeff
