ACE50 Posted November 13, 2011 #1 Posted November 13, 2011 I found the oil leak on my Venture. It's on the engine case split line in a hard to access area next to the clutch pin and seal. Had to remove the clutch actuator cyl to see it. Seeing the amount of gunk build up in that area, I think it's been leaking for years. There is a ¼" landing there. (shadow area) I'm thinking I might clean it up real good and just fill it in with JB Weld. Otherwise it looks like an engine pull and case split! Any other idea's?
flb_78 Posted November 13, 2011 #2 Posted November 13, 2011 I've used the double barrel plastic epoxy to seal small external oil leaks before. It's fairly easy to remove. Just spray the area down with quick drying brake cleaner and smear it on as soon as it's dry.
MikeWa Posted November 13, 2011 #3 Posted November 13, 2011 JB Weld is a little scary. Good stuff but it could be a problem at some later date. I would use some hi temp silicone with a little pressure behind it to force it into the opening. Or even some liquid nails. But good luck whatever you do. Mike
allwx Posted November 13, 2011 #4 Posted November 13, 2011 Personally, I wouldn't do anything. You may end up having to split the cases some day down the road, for maybe a tranny repair, and could fix it then. I don't recall you saying the amount of oil coming out was more than a few drops here and there. As long as it isn't making a big mess, and isn't showing up as consumption, and isn't maybe getting onto your rear tire and brake, this is WAY too small a prob to justify all that work. Patrick
Marcarl Posted November 13, 2011 #5 Posted November 13, 2011 I would do a real good clean up,, then clean it again and then use JB weld. If it should ever have to come apart, a Dremel tool will work wonders.
BuddyRich Posted November 13, 2011 #6 Posted November 13, 2011 Clean it real good. Then clean it with denatured Alcohol which removes oil. The use some RTV sealant or Silicone . If its cleaned good the rtv should seal it right up..
ACE50 Posted November 13, 2011 Author #7 Posted November 13, 2011 Ya, I didn't say the amount leaking. It's prob a few drops every mile. Haven't noticed it in consumtion yet as I haven't put that many miles on it yet. It's location is a pain as you have to pull the clutch cylinder out, which is tight itself. I think I'll JB Weld it as I don't want to have to get back in there. I've pulled the secondary side cover about 4-5 times just trying to find it. Gone through the rest of the bike and she's running pretty good now. Looking forward to next riding season for some longer trips. Thanks for the replies.
steamer Posted November 13, 2011 #8 Posted November 13, 2011 put an HD tag on the tank and forget about it.
Yammer Dan Posted November 13, 2011 #9 Posted November 13, 2011 I would go with something easier to clean off. You never know.
muffinman Posted November 14, 2011 #10 Posted November 14, 2011 Don't use jb weld use Indian head shelack after as good cleaning
capn eddie Posted November 14, 2011 #11 Posted November 14, 2011 Don't use jb weld use Indian head shelack after as good cleaning i have used the Indian head shelack to do this and like muffinman said, worked on my gl 1000 goldwing for three years and still no leak.
Marcarl Posted November 14, 2011 #12 Posted November 14, 2011 I'd say that if the Muffinman says to use Shellac, then use Shellac!!!
ACE50 Posted November 14, 2011 Author #13 Posted November 14, 2011 Indian head shelack, I never would have thought of that one. Easier to apply too. Thanks.
