ACE50 Posted November 7, 2011 #1 Posted November 7, 2011 Well my leak was not the shift shaft seal as I still have it, noticed the clutch cylinder is above it and the netural switch. Anyone ever have a leak on the clutch actuator? My manual doesn't list a seal there. It is motor oil and not hyd fluid. Guess I'll be tearing it back apart!
etcswjoe Posted November 7, 2011 #2 Posted November 7, 2011 Are you sure it is oil? I thought I had an oil leak but it was coolant form the freeze plug under the fake fins. It just looked like oil going through all the gunk on the bike when it hit the ground. I don't remember your earlier post on this so please refresh my memory (sucks getting old).

I don't even have the fins on. The leak is under the engine, left rear area. It had been leaking for a long time. Just bought it and it had a lot of gunk buildup underneath, right around the shift shaft seal. Thats not it though (replaced) as I just got it back on the road (went though the carbs and she's purring like an angry kitten!) and still a small leak.
etcswjoe Posted November 7, 2011 #4 Posted November 7, 2011 I may be grasping at straws, however is there a possibility that the seal in your swingarm is bad and it's finial drive oil coming up through the tube?
ACE50 Posted November 7, 2011 Author #5 Posted November 7, 2011 I may be grasping at straws, however is there a possibility that the seal in your swingarm is bad and it's finial drive oil coming up through the tube? Serviced that. It's fine.
allwx Posted November 7, 2011 #6 Posted November 7, 2011 Even small oil leaks suck, but if it is only a few drops here and there, personally I wouldn't do anything sudden. Just keep looking for it, and eventually it will show itself.
ACE50 Posted November 7, 2011 Author #8 Posted November 7, 2011 Can you post some pics? I can barely see up there myself, but I'll try.

Kregerdoodle Posted November 7, 2011 #10 Posted November 7, 2011 just tossin this out there, have you checked where the stator wires exit the case??

Condor Posted November 8, 2011 #12 Posted November 8, 2011 Another stab... Have you checked the middle gear cover for leaks?? I had one cover on the '91 that leaked, and another that didn't. New gasket both times...
Trader Posted November 8, 2011 #13 Posted November 8, 2011 folks here have stated that the breather hoses can cause a few drops every now and then. Nothing wrong with the bike...just the nature of the beast! Could it be from there?
ACE50 Posted November 8, 2011 Author #14 Posted November 8, 2011 Another stab... Have you checked the middle gear cover for leaks?? I had one cover on the '91 that leaked, and another that didn't. New gasket both times... I put on a new gasket when I replaced the shifter seal. It looked fine. It's in that general area though. Gonna have to pull it again to see I think. My next guess is the clutch actuator.
Rick Butler Posted November 8, 2011 #15 Posted November 8, 2011 Well, There is one other possibility that is the nuetral switch assembly. On our 1st gen Ventures, this same mechanism also contained the wires for our gear indicator. It's located right next to the shift shaft and has one wire going to it. Now either the O ring seal on this piece or possibley the contact point that comes through the plastic to where the wire attaches could possibly be leaking (or seeping) In the parts diagram below, it's item 1. And if this is showing evidence of a leak, then you will have the chance to replace the middle gear gasket again? Hope this helps, Rick http://partstream.arinet.com/Image?arik=71LIQdy2fHozSGJ3N84A&arib=YAM&arim=nMDLAaRFf4eRRnlhLgxy3Q2&aria=kTVwrZi1czW8BtM0EoPs_g2&ariz=2&ariv=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starmotorcycles.com%2Fpartviewer%2Fdefault.aspx%3Fls%3Dstar I put on a new gasket when I replaced the shifter seal. The covers are needed to hold in the rubber water jacket drain plugs - without them you will blow the plugs right out as soon as the cooling system builds up some pressure. Goose

Goose You know I figured that was the case but I forgot about it and rode it twice now without them. Got lucky I guess!
BuddyRich Posted November 8, 2011 #18 Posted November 8, 2011 Have you checked the rear valve cover gasket left side inboard (between the cylinders)?
ACE50 Posted November 9, 2011 Author #19 Posted November 9, 2011 Have you checked the rear valve cover gasket left side inboard (between the cylinders)? It's actually underneath the rubber (1½x1½) cover on clutch bleeder valve. That's were the clutch actuator is and neutral switch I think. Have to pull the side cover to get at them again. I just didn't see in manual that there is a gasket for clutch actuator. Never been in there before. I was just curious if anyone has before. These darn bikes are so reliable I don't expect a lot of people have!
