Rick Haywood Posted November 5, 2011 #1 Posted November 5, 2011 OK, I noticed today that my clutch started slipping , I have not had an issue with it since I changed the clutch spring and pressuere plate to a Barnett. I changed the oil yesterday and noticed the slipping today in 5th when I roll back on the throttle pretty hard. I use yamalube oil so that shouldn't have anything to do with it. The bike has 64,000 miles. Is it time to replace the clutch or could it be something else? I am going to go out and change the fluid now which I do not believe has anything to do with it but you never know. I changed it at around 46,000. Anyway do I need to just replace the friction plates or what do you all suggest. I ride 2 up most the time but am not a hard rider. I do pull a trailer 2-3 times a year on vacations for a week at a time. Thanks for your suggestions ps I ride around 32,000 miles a year and I have had the bike for 16 months
muffinman Posted November 6, 2011 #2 Posted November 6, 2011 New friction disks and a non directional finish on the hard disks should do it Jeff
pktexas Posted November 6, 2011 #3 Posted November 6, 2011 I just had the same issue with my 05 at 78k. Had replaced spring back at 26k. Purchased a kit from Earl (skydoc_17) for 8 new disc. Took care of the slipping, have been riding 2up the last several days since replacing.
Flyinfool Posted November 6, 2011 #4 Posted November 6, 2011 A brand new clutch friction disc is 3mm (0.118 inch) thick. The spec in the service manual for worn out disc is 2.8mm (.110 inch) thick. That means you only have 0.004 inch of material on each side to wear off before the clutch is done.
