david Taylor Posted October 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2011 the chirping on my 01 is taking the fun out of riding. i've put 9000 miles on it since March and I'm not getting use to it. I'm going to have to do something. It sounds like the I-basked is a gamble. might or might not work. just wondering if the 1st gen. chirpped. why does yamaha ignore this problem? frankd Posted October 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2011 Yamaha has used straight cut clutch drive gears for a long time, and yes, they've all made noise to varying degrees. Each one sings a different song. My 89 sings a little here and there, my 83 sings a bit louder, but only at one RPM, and my XS-750 used to sing a little bit also. However, none of them were/are loud enough to be annoying. Frank D.
bongobobny Posted October 22, 2011 Share #3 Posted October 22, 2011 Hmmmm, rev it up and pop the clutch and the rear tire will do more than chirp, the front tire will come off the ground as well!! Oh, you were talking about the CLUTCH chirping...

If you haven't done so you might try going back to a Dino oil. My '99 makes a little noise... 'bout the same as the '83... at lower R's once in a while when starting off, but it quickly disappears above 1500-2000 rpm. The p.o. of the '99 only used Dino, same as I used on the '83, and I don't know if that's the reason for the low whine, but I'm going to continue.... I think I read somewhere here that Y installed matched gear sets on the early Ventures...and I may have gotten lucky on the '99?? The 'I' basket may help, but you're never going to know unless you try....

MiCarl Posted October 22, 2011 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2011 I can hear that "chirp" on most Yamahas a block away. The exceptions are the ones with a chain drive primary (XJ550 comes to mind, but there are a few others). My 89 is most audible at about 3,000 RPM. Most of the other Japanese bikes use straight cut primary drive gears and I can hear them too. It just doesn't bother me. Either some 2nd Gen Ventures are especially loud or they attract buyers who are especially sensitive to the sound.
Black Owl Posted October 22, 2011 Share #7 Posted October 22, 2011 A first gen may chirp, but they are so dang fast the rider never hears it..... :rotfl:
friesman Posted October 23, 2011 Share #8 Posted October 23, 2011 My 85 definitely has it and its darn loud at certain speeds and i am finding that the hotter the day, the louder it gets. Mine whines at all speeds but its loudest right around 3000rpm. Brian
