EDGE1 Posted October 17, 2011 #1 Posted October 17, 2011 I bought my 2002 gen 2 about 4 months ago and the previous owner said it had a new battery , but after a couple of weeks of occassional use its dead flat , tried re-charging but battery would hold a charge even when not connected !! So i guessed dead cell and replaced the battery charged the new battery fully and fitted it. Over the next few days left it on my optimate charger . But for the following two weeks its been in my car showroom where i work , i went to move it today and guess what Dead! it lights the dash but just clicked when i atempted to start . What could be draining her or do these bikes need to live on the optimate chargers ! Cheers Edge
bkuhr Posted October 17, 2011 #2 Posted October 17, 2011 Going to take some testing to figure out. Will need 1. Fully charged battery 2. A AMP/MILIAMP meter hook up in line (SERIES) with the battery identify a load in excess of about 60mA(clock/radio memory) Then start pulling fuses until excessive load stops. Pulled fuse that stopped excessive load will identify the circuit to look at for the problem.
XV1100SE Posted October 17, 2011 #3 Posted October 17, 2011 If something was wired the wrong way (without relay) and is "live" all the time an accessory can drain the battery too. I have the iSimple iPod adapter and it is live all the time to keep the iPod charged. If I don't run the bike for a few days I disconnect the iPod. Did you have the old battery tested to confirm it was a bad cell? Also, the new battery might not be perfect and might need testing.
MikeWa Posted October 18, 2011 #4 Posted October 18, 2011 Was it on a tender? If so check for bad connections. If not there have been some cases of the keep alive causing the battery to go low over a week or two. Especially with the audio system. You should be able to track it down with a parasitic draw test. P.O. stated that he put a new battery in the bike recently. It was one of those 'Bike Masters'. Anyway it went dead a couple of times, so I replaced it with a DEKA. Things were better, but even the DEKA went dead after sitting a few months during the winter. I did occassionally run it to keep the surfaces oiled. Prior to leaving for the international in Cody I checked the batt and it was charging at 17vdc. I didn't have time to chase things, so left on a prayer. Made it all the way to Thermopolis WY before the battery when totally dead. I ran 2.5 days on battery power alone. Still thought it was the battery... DOH!! Bought a CarQuest battery and made it to Cody. Checked the next morning and the charge rate was 14.2 vdc. Went on a ride and killed the CQ. Finally replaced the rectifier with a new one. Problem solved. The thing hasn't died since, and spins the starter like crazy after sitting for a month or more. So..... you might want to take a look at the rectifier??
