kkent66 Posted October 9, 2011 #1 Posted October 9, 2011 I have a small oil leak. Attaching a few pics. The leak is coming what looks like a connector coming from just above the exhaust and the back side of the engine. There is a hose connected to this but it is leaking at the point it comes out of the engine. Sorry for the lack of technical expertise and hope the pictures explain what I have a hard time putting into words!!
flb_78 Posted October 9, 2011 #4 Posted October 9, 2011 If it's leaking out of that fitting, that's a major problem because that is an elbow for the AIS and it has nothing to do with oil. Instead, oil probably is most likely coming off the valve cover and blowing back onto that fitting.

V7Goose Posted October 9, 2011 #6 Posted October 9, 2011 The AIS is a passive pollution control system that reduces the amount of unburned hydrocarbons that are blown out the tail pipe. Your pictures focus on the AIS induction port. It can have absolutely nothing to do with an oil leak. The only logical source for oil in that area is from the valve cover gasket. To positively identify the source, you need to spray the area with engine de-greaser and then hose it off good. After it has completely dried, use some spray foot powder and lightly coat the base of the valve cover in that area. Any leak will be immediately visible when it starts. You haven't bothered to tell us how old your bike is, or how many miles are on it, but a very light re-torque of the valve cover bolts could fix it for you. But be gentle - the torque spec is very light for those bolts. You can find the shop manual for free in the tech library. Replacing those gaskets is a relatively big deal, since getting the covers off is a LOT of work - if that is needed, just plan on getting the valves adjusted. Depending on the miles on your engine, that might be your best option anyway. Goose

Valves were adjusted by dealer this past summer before my trip from Ohio to California and back. I have been talking via email with Freebird and as you have pointed out all signs seem to point to valve cover gasket. I am going to tfootpowder spray and see what I can find!!! Thanks for your input - I appreciate you expertise and wisdom!!!
