mike042 Posted September 27, 2011 #1 Posted September 27, 2011 hi all I found this stuff at advanced auto vavoline synthetic brake fluid dot 3&4 ? do you think it good for the clutch on 83 venture. its good price about 6 bucks for a quart bottle. but i never seen brake fluid marked 3 and 4 . your thoughts???
RandyR Posted September 27, 2011 #2 Posted September 27, 2011 3 and 4 are compatible, with 4 having a higher boiling point. They're just saying it can be used for systems designed for either 3 or 4, which should be true of any DOT 4 brake fluid. A quart is a lot of brake fluid. More than enough to do your brakes and clutch twice over.

Are you sure this is synthetic?? I know I'm late on this but I'm researching the subject for my winter project! I thought only DOT5 was synthetic!

Galapagos Posted November 23, 2011 #10 Posted November 23, 2011 The one concern with DOT 4 syn fluid is that it will hold water from condensation. They use it in Mack/Volvo clutches. I am a Service manager for Mack/Volvo.

All the others absorb moisture and keep the water in suspension. Glycol is a type of alcohol, thus the affinity for water.

I got all exited when I saw this thread and found I can get it locally. I was thinking I'd change over to it cuz it won't eat paint! I was wrong...the only one that does not eat paint it DOT5 (silicone based).

MiCarl Posted November 23, 2011 #16 Posted November 23, 2011 It just boils down to whether the marketing department puts "synthetic" on the label. To add to the confusion, most "synthetic" motor oil is not synthetic. Since the original introduction of synthetic motor oil petroleum refining has improved to where equivalent polymers can be isolated at less cost. The courts have ruled that the polymers can be called "synthetic" regardless of how they were derived.
