GolfVenture Posted September 21, 2011 #1 Posted September 21, 2011 The dealer wants $25.00 for an Exhaust/Collector gasket. I'm thinking of making one. I'm looking for copper sheet but so far can only find brass, aluminum, zinc sheets. Was wondering if anyone knew if one should stay away from brass, aluminum or zinc. I will be checking Home Depot and Lowes tomorrow for copper sheets for I was told that the earlier years the exhaust gasket were made from copper, but the newer ones are some sort of silver color material. Welcome any comments.
Yammer Dan Posted September 21, 2011 #2 Posted September 21, 2011 I don't know about the newer ones. I read a long time ago somewhere about somebody making some out of a copper plumbing fitting. Can't find it. I've looked but can't find anything yet.
dingy Posted September 22, 2011 #3 Posted September 22, 2011 Brass is a copper/zinc alloy. Generally about 20~40% zinc. It will work just fine for what you are doing. Gary
GolfVenture Posted September 22, 2011 Author #4 Posted September 22, 2011 This morning I took of both collectors and saw that both does have the gasket. So it must be the clamp. I put the clamp in a vise and bent the neck of the clamp so that the clamp could be tighten a bit more. That did the trick. After seeing the Gasket, yep Im sure I could have made a gasket out of Brass for less than $2.00 instead of the Dealers $25.00 and still have material to make a few more.
Yammer Dan Posted September 22, 2011 #5 Posted September 22, 2011 Is this the clamp on the rear headers? If it is take clamp off, open it up and grind its ears off. Then it will tighten up.
