Venturous Randy Posted September 21, 2011 #1 Posted September 21, 2011 As I noted in my post on Rick,s "Rookie Mistake" thread, yesterday while going very slow and coming to a stop while encountering some very fine gravel, I slid the front tire and went down. Fortunately, other than busting up my left fairing, we were able to get up and go on. It now appears I may have encountered a delayed injury. About 4:30 today my right eye went very blurry and I am also seeing areas of red. I went to the local VA because I was not sure if I had had a light stroke or what. At the moment I either may have a detached retina or a Vitreous Hemorrhage. The big question I got was have I done anything to exert myself and I said yep, yesterday I picked up an 800 pound motorcycle that I dropped. So, I am to be at the eye clinic at the VA first thing in the morning for an evaluation. RandyA
RandyR Posted September 21, 2011 #2 Posted September 21, 2011 Good luck with the doctor. Hopefully its something simple that will heal.

RandyA DOnt wait!!! i did when I had my detached retina and I now have impaired vision in my left eye as a result of the edges of the retina tear dying and scar tissue forming. I would advise going to an ER and get it looked asap! If i had gone to an ER instead of my eye doctor i was told my vision would be much better in the left eye. My retina surgeon told me that he gets emergency calls at all hours as time is everything to get good vision restored. Get your butt to an ER , and make them look at it and get that eye fixed, your vision is worth it!!! Brian
mother Posted September 21, 2011 #4 Posted September 21, 2011 i agree with Friesman, get your butt over to ER. dont play around with your eyesight. take care and hope all works out. Scott
Yammer Dan Posted September 21, 2011 #5 Posted September 21, 2011 You guys gonna have to stop this stuff!!! We don't heal aas good as we did a few years ago....... Get eye fixed then bike Randy and if you quit dropping that thing you wouldn't have to pick it up..... Sorry Buddy.
muffinman Posted September 21, 2011 #6 Posted September 21, 2011 Randy randy randy when are you gonna learn? You are supposed to drop the bike when there is someone there to help stand it back up.:rotf:Just kidding you know we care about you. I hope your peeper is ok let us know what the quaks say. Jeff
FuzzyRSTD Posted September 21, 2011 #7 Posted September 21, 2011 That is a bummer Randy. Yes it does take longer to heal as you age. Like a good friend of mine sometimes says,"Man it sucks to get old". Hope all turns OK for you. Listen to the doc and do as they say. Your eyes are very delicate and very precious. Fuzzy
myminpins Posted September 21, 2011 #8 Posted September 21, 2011 I hope you heeded the advice here and went to the ER and had your eye looked at. Fingers crossed it'll heal quickly and well so you can still drive again!! You picked that bike up by yourself? Ouch!! Get well soon!!!!
etcswjoe Posted September 21, 2011 #9 Posted September 21, 2011 I agree with those that have posted already, GO TO THE DOCTOR NOW!!! Will keep you in our prayers and hope you get better soon.
Marcarl Posted September 21, 2011 #10 Posted September 21, 2011 Don't wait,, go now,, er, you should be there rather than reading this. And to prepare for the next time that it might happen that the scooter should fall over,,,, learn how to get it up right without a lot of effort,,, by yourself, it ain't hard to do.
sgn Posted September 21, 2011 #11 Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) Just spoke to Randy (8:30 AM) he is sitting at the VA waiting to see the doctor (optomologist). Mad at himself for dropping the bike, said Ms. Linda was ok just a little sore and stiff. Will update if I hear more ... ediddy Posted September 21, 2011 #12 Posted September 21, 2011 Dont go to the ER. Get to an optomologist immediately. Don't delay. One sunday morning my wife's vision in her left eye went blank. We went to the emergency room at approx 10:00am. They ran all kind of test that didn't have anything to do with her eyes. EKG, MRI etc. They then wanted to keep her overnight. The next day at 4:00pm after running every expensive test you can think of they decided to send her to an optomologist. The optomologist said she had a detached retina and it was urgent to get it corrected immediatley. He said the longer you wait the greater chance you won't get your sight back. He called a specialist from Tallahassee Florida and scheduled her for surgery the next morining. This surgery is so specialized even an optomologist can't do the surgery. The surgery went well and she got all of her sight back. Don't waste your time in the ER with regular medical doctors. Please, please get to an optomologist immediately.
Venturous Randy Posted September 21, 2011 Author #13 Posted September 21, 2011 I just got home from the VA eye clinic. I have a 1:00 appointment at the retina center, which is our local eye hospital. So far it looks like a vitreous hemorrhage and some blood around the retina, but not a detached retina. I will know more this afternoon as right now there is too much blood in my eye for them to see everything. RandyA
Yammer Dan Posted September 21, 2011 #14 Posted September 21, 2011 Sounds like maybe the lesser of several evils that could be going on in there Randy. Just get it taken care of quickly. I don't even want to think about that bike but it can be fixed.
elmicko Posted September 21, 2011 #15 Posted September 21, 2011 Good Luck Randy. Let me know if you need anything at all.
Grisolm1 Posted September 21, 2011 #16 Posted September 21, 2011 Timely post. Just went to the eye Dr yesterday. Virtuous detachment accompanied with "floaters". Said should clear up but suggested drinking lots of water and most importantly fish oil capsules. He said fish oil will take about 6 weeks to have effect. Internal dehydration thing as we get older.
friesman Posted September 21, 2011 #17 Posted September 21, 2011 thks for keeping us posted Randy. Am glad to hear that its probabaly not a detached retina, but the blood in the eye issue is still serious. Keep pushing them on it and dont let them put you off. Almost everything with eyesight needs timely treatment, delays usually mean worse outcomes..... Brian
Midicat Posted September 21, 2011 #18 Posted September 21, 2011 While I feel badly about this situation, I hope we can all learn a lesson from this. We aren't as young as we once were (although we may still FEEL indestructible), we can't be pushing ourselves like we used to. Take a moment to assess the situation and remember to consider that you aren't 18 anymore and you probably need help. Unless you heed Marcarl's advice and follow some very simple instructions on how to right your ride, solo. It's really not as strenuous or difficult as you might think. So simple, even a girl can do it. [ame=http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2328334/how_to_lift_a_dropped_motorcycle/]How to Lift a Dropped Motorcycle - Video[/ame] Thomas

tz89 Posted September 22, 2011 #20 Posted September 22, 2011 of this so-called rookie mistake that can happen to anyone. Tell about about using just the front brake on wet or gravel, etc. Thanks
Venturous Randy Posted September 22, 2011 Author #21 Posted September 22, 2011 (edited) I was at the eye clinic at the VA at 7:30 this morning and they were able to work me in pretty quick. After a lot of very bright lights shining in both eyes, they sent me to our main civilian eye hospital. This was for a review with an eye surgeon. After another round of being dilated again and a lot more bright lights, the determination is a big time ruptured blood vessel. It is so bad that the doctor has me set up for surgery at 9am tomorrow. This will consist of having the gel taken out of my eye and the leaking blood vessel hopefully fixed. Then, a bubble will be put into the eye to give it the correct shape. The vision I end up with could range from one end to the other, but probably not as good as it was. So this is just another one of the things I am having to deal with after loosing my job at the end of June. Well, anyway, Sunday is my 61th birthday. Getting old ain't exactly being the golden years so far. RandyA Edited September 22, 2011 by Venturous Randy
friesman Posted September 22, 2011 #22 Posted September 22, 2011 Your eye and vision will probably be fine, although possible slightly less clear vision after the vitrectomy. I had it done last year and the bubble in your eye messes up your balance slightly as it constantly shifts as your head moves from side to side. You wont have much vision in that eye until the bubble is gone, so try not to worry about it. After 4 -6 weeks you should be back to normal and will be a bit more sensitvie to light than you were before. If you need any more info Randy please feel free to call or message anytime. Brian

myminpins Posted September 22, 2011 #25 Posted September 22, 2011 Best of luck with your surgery. I hope your vision is basically back to normal within two months.
