alvald83 Posted September 18, 2011 #1 Posted September 18, 2011 I have changed my oil regularly since i have owned my bike (4 years). The problem is, i cant see through the oilcheck window. How do i check my oil? How do i clean the window? http://venturers.org/Forum/download/file.php?avatar=11210_1269700717.jpg
Snaggletooth Posted September 18, 2011 #2 Posted September 18, 2011 I have to ask as you said you have had the bike four years. How did you know where the oil level was when you changed it? How much oil do use use during a change. Is it possible that the oil is over full, over the top of the sight glass. Is the glass cloudy? Or is it dark? One trick I have used in the past for dirty sight glasses is adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the change. It does break loose a lot of grime on the inside of a case. Mike
alvald83 Posted September 18, 2011 Author #3 Posted September 18, 2011 I have my oil changed at a local shop, but i like to check it before a long ride. The window seems to be cloudy. I believe the shop puts close to 5 qts.
friesman Posted September 18, 2011 #4 Posted September 18, 2011 I beleive it should only hold around 3.5 quarts of oil. thats why you cant see the level as youre over the top of the window. I would be inclined to drain some out until you can see the level drop to the middle of your window when its level and on your center stand. I would also check your air filter box as most guys end up with oil up there when the crankcase is overfilled and it gets your filter all messed up too. brian
Pegasus1300 Posted September 18, 2011 #5 Posted September 18, 2011 AT 5 quarts you are way overfilled. It only takes 3.8 with the filter change. Your level in the sight glass should be at about the middle.Drain a little out then remove the top of your air filter housing and clean out the oil that has gathered there from the breather pushing the overfill up in there.
Lil Venturous Posted September 18, 2011 #6 Posted September 18, 2011 I heard the glass is not hard to pop in and out, But have not done it myself. will try and check on some spare cases at dads sometime and see how hard it is to remove and install the sight glass.
Woody Posted September 18, 2011 #7 Posted September 18, 2011 sounds like someone filled up the oil with the bike on the side stand, check it on the side stand to see and if you can see a level your glass is ok. then just drain the oil to the proper level.
