Good Lord, that thing cost billions and that's the best they could do in the way of a seat. Kind of the same philosophy as Yammie!

 

I guess that the only time there would be weight on your but is for the hour or so during reentry and landing. How much padding do you need when weightless?

Yep...its not a luxury airliner....its costs $10,000 a pound to send equipment, cargo and people into orbit via the shuttle...so that 100 pounds of comfy seats (times 7 crewmembers) would get very expensive, if its not really needed.

 

Heck the lunar lander from the Apollo missions didnt even HAVE seats.
