Time to seek your input again. As most of you have noticed by now, I have created a classifieds area within the forum. One of the reasons for this is that our supporting members such as Sky_Doc, Rick Butler, Carbon_One, etc. were constantly having problems with their ads expiring in the old system. There is no way to make ads there permanent so those vendors who have multiple items for sale over a long period were always having to re-create their ads once they went away.

I worked on that problem for some time but just didn't get it to work correctly. So, I decided to test the classifieds in the forum.

The downside to having them in the forum is that they are now set to expire in 60 days except for our member vendors. In all other areas, the ads expire in 60 days and you do not have an option to renew them and you will not receive a notification that your ad is about to expire. There is also no way to do auctions for St. Judes or otherwise.

So, my question is, which do you prefer? Do you like the old classifieds better or the new forum based ones? If you like the forum based ads then I have to assume that you are OK with the limitations regarding no renewals and etc.

At this time, I have turned off the old ads so that no new ones can be placed but I can easily just turn it back on. As for the member vendors, one option would be to let them keep their forum areas but have all other ads placed in the old system. I don't want two complete systems however. I don't think....heck...that is another option though and it's really up to you.

As always, your feedback will be appreciated.

It may be my not so great computer skills but a month or so I tried to find Rick Butlers seat mod ad and never could...I will look at it again, maybe I wasnt looking in the correct area?

No, he has not re-posted it yet. He knows about the new area and will get it posted again but he and his wife and been away for a nice ride. I'm sure that he will get it put there soon.

I sort of liked the old way better.

I would get an email that ad was expiring, and could click on a link to renew it, not really that hard to do.

If I would put a large quantity in the Number of Items Avalible box, when one was sold ad would still remain open, this was for wrenches I sell and have more than one to sell.

Actually, I sort of liked the old way better too, but i haven't really used the new classifieds much. Seems like it's harder to get to. I'm sure it's just me, but if there was a link to click on to get to them, I'd leave it as is.

All this stuff for me just takes getting used to. But I always have HOME come up when I get on.

BUT, thanks for all you do,

I'm surprised people who post ads don't keep a copy at home on their computer so, if the ad expires, it's quick and easy to repost it.

If you used to let us know when an ad was about to expire and you could click a button to renew it, I'd definitely prefer that system. That way, if it's sold, no problem. If it's not and you were just busy or whatever, you make sure it's out there for anyone who's interested.

so with the "NEW" system....vendor ads would just be a "sticky" and not expire at all?

Nothing wrong with that!

And as was already suggested....for the rest of us.....it takes nothing to copy and paste the ad text from your computer to a new ad if it hasn't sold and expires.

I caught the ad for Rick Haywood's trailer on the site this weekend. I would have never seen it if it went to the old ads, since I buy on impulse and don't really shop.

"That is all I have to say about that." Spoken by a smarter man than me.

Don, I notice you're running vBulletin® Version 3.8.7 .... would a newer version (current is 4.0 I believe) resolve any of this?

No, the classifieds software is completely different than the forum software. I have thought about upgrading the forum to the latest version but every time I start looking into that, I just read about too many bugs and other issues with it. Also, a LOT of the customizations that I have in place here will not be compatible with the new version and some of the features would be missed. I will likely have to eventually do the upgrade but I'm just not looking forward to it.

Makes sense to me. Everyone is always harping at me to upgrade this or that on my computer but hello? It works. It does everything I need it to do so why screw with it? Newer is NOT always better - as many on here should know driving bikes 20 years or so old!! :)

And this is from a guy that was giving me heck about my Firefox Version?

And on a related note, I just checked my search, and it is old way.

Does anyone else get the window shown below when they click on the Search tab in the second blue bar at the top of screen?

Newer version has a Google search option at bottom.

Gary,

I have no idea why yours is not showing the Google search option at times. I've asked you several times though...HAVE YOU CLEARED YOUR BROWSERS CACHE? You have never answered me and that is about the only thing that I know that could be causing it to not show up. It acts like you have an old page stuck in your cache that is sometimes coming up.

OK I'm always going against the general flow. I like the new way because I'm always using the 'New Posts' feature, and any new ad will appear when I check in. And if it hasn't sold in 60 days... it ain't..... My :2cents:

I totally agree (if it works, don't fix it) ... but even though it works, if it can't do all that you want, then upgrading or changing is the only recourse. Needs change over time. What you bought today might give you all that you need ... today. Tomorrow is a different story.

Exactly. That's why I made sure to say:

It does everything I need it to do so why screw with it?

I've been using Windows 7 for a long time now and I love it. Firefox? Still using the old version as I've heard so many negative things about the new version. I use Opera as my main browser, anyway, so Firefox is secondary.

I rarely ever update my Windows versions, though, once they're installed unless they do a major upgrade in a package type thing.

I use "new posts" for the day when I browse 99.9% of the time so if someone posts something in any of the threads/categories I want to know about, I'll know it right away. :) I love that feature!!!:D

So this is what it's supposed to look like, correct?

Yes, that is what everybody should see. It is hard coded into the software so if anybody is NOT seeing the Google option, they are viewing an old page that almost has to be the result of it being in your local browser's cache.

As for Windows. I am slow to upgrade also. I used Windows NT for as long as I could and really liked it. I totally skipped ME and anything else that came out before XP. I used XP as long as I could and it really worked great for me. I skipped Vista completely. Unfortunately though, I just got a new computer last week and it came with Windows 7. To be honest, I haven't found anything about it that I actually like any better than XP but it seems to work fine. The only issue I have with it is that some of my favorite old software will not work on this Windows 7 64 bit system. So, I'm looking for a few new software titles to replace some that I've been using for a long time and haven't found any that I like quite as well yet.

That's the new & improved version.

Mine is there sometimes, but most of time it is the non Google version.

I have cleared all history, saved internet files, cookies. Also updated to FF 6.01.

That's why I was sure to get the 32 bit version. I don't know if you can still get it or not but I hate this 64 bit crap as so much of my software wouldn't work, either.

Whenever I get a new computer, I wipe it and put my own O/S on it, etc., etc so I'll be sticking to the 32 bit version as long as I can.

Are you going under "Options/Privacy/History" and clearing that? If so, from what I just read, you ARE clearing your cache.
