Bike dies in neutral with sidestand down

My 83 will not run with the sidestand down with the bike in neutral with clutch out. If I pull the clutch in just a little bit, it will run. It acts this way with two different CMS's and sidestand switches. When I put it in neutral, the light comes on as it is supposed to, so it appears it is getting power through the shifting mechanism.

Any suggestions?

mine did the same scenario.

 

jumper out the sidestand switch and see if that works. that was my problem.

 

installed a brand new switch and all back to normal.

One other thing, with the side stand down and in neutral, the starter will crank over, but it just will not fire. I had the side cover off and if the B/W wire was grounded, would it ground the igniter with the side stand down?

Yes it would, side stand relay is down. See schematic I posted above.

If I'm not mistaken it's a safety feature the bike has... If the kickstand is down and clutch is not ingaged it will not run. The actuator is on the kickstand itself.

Only if it is in gear. It should run in neutral with the side stand down without the clutch in.

Shouldn't they also start in gear with clutch pulled in? Mine won't.

Mine didnt either until i put a new clutch switch in, my cruise was flaky also, and now its rock solid.

It should start in gear with the clutch pulled in if the sidestand it up.

Quick check to isolate the sidestand switch is to pull connector apart and connect all three wires together on harness side and see if problem goes away. If it does then side stand switch is defective.

One conductor is a ground and other two conductrs are signal wires, so tying all three together presents no issues.
