The PO kept telling me it needed 5 qts at an oil change because he had installed a spin on filter adapter. I noticed that the oil level window was covered with oil. Spec is 5 total, 4 on a change w filter. If he was adding 5 at a change, I guess he was running w 6 in the case.

It's as it should be now, but has anyone heard of this happening with any effect of some kind?

Most of us find that if the oil is more than halfway between the marks on the sight glass you will get oil in your breather box making your air filter a mess and oil will drip from the tube below that.

I have a spin on filter adapter and mine holds almost exaclty 3 liters (quarts are almost exactly the same size) but depending on your style of adapter kit you situation may be different. I would put in 3, start it for a couple of minutes and then let the bike sit for 30 minutes and see where youre at. (make sure youre on level ground)

Holy smoke! How big of an oil filter is on the thing?

With the bike on the center stand on level ground, four quarts would put the oil in the sight glass over the top. I have the spin-on adaptor also and I didn't see all that much of an increase in oil needed at a change.

As he said, start with three quarts and then let it run a bit and settle. Add about 1/2 quart to middle of the sight glass. Run again and settle. Dial it in as needed. I've never used a full four quarts to top it off. Always have a bit left in the bottle.

I can't imagine pouring five in there without making a mess of the air filter and air intake box.

I just put in 3 1/2 quarts (although I have the stock oil filter), and then next time I use the left over 1/2 quart and 3 fresh quarts. After running the motor to fill the filter, my oil level is a little above 1/2 on the sight glass.

Could too much oil cause sticky valves or lifters?

More likely gaskets and seals and like stated a big mess in the air filter and intake system to much oil in the intake can cause problems as well like fouled plugs and and build up around piston rings

gaskets & seals are the ones to worry about to much oil in the case will build up pressure and it will find the weakest point like the crank case vent tube going to the air filter system gasket & seals are next as for blowing out and seeping by
