several years ago i purchased the Knight Rider LED lightbar for the trunk of the RSV..

WORKS GREAT!!!!!

 

 

How did you wire that up. I got one of those also but I need to make a mount and run the wires...

TwoStars, I also ordered the 100 LED brake light and front and rear turn signals from Custom Dynamics, great people there. To get my lights to flash at normal rate I had to use one of their load equalizers (pn# GEN-7.5-30) connected to the front signals (put it in the headlight bezel since that is an easy place to hide it and get to the front signal wires), and 2 load equalizers (mounted under the seat) on the rear lights to get them to flash at the normal rate. I used my stock flasher so I still have my self cancel feature. If you order the kit that they say works with the RSTD or Venture it really doesn't. You do not need the diode kit for the flasher indicator on the dash and the stock flasher works fine once you install the load equalizers as I did. You just have to put enough load back on the system to get the stock flasher to work normal. If anyone has questions I'd be glad to share more.

 

Lonewolf96, you mentioned you mounted 2 load equalizers under the seat for the rear lights. The pn# GEN-7.5-30 serves both sides (2 hots and a ground). Are those the "two" you were referring to? Not two GEN-7.5-30s? That diode kit you refer to, is that the metric signal stabilizer Custom Dynamic offers instead of the equalizer? That's what they're recommending I go with.

 

Also XV1100SE brings up a great point about the quick connects. I used them since I did the install the night before taking a 3-day trip. I'll go back and solder them and see if that makes a difference. My front bulbs are good so that's not the problem - I'm not opposed to checking the obvious.

 

By the way, since the whole reason for going with the LEDs is to light up the back end, I must say they work as advertised. Before I installed the LEDs, my riding buddy told me he'd often lose me in the shadows when riding behind me on sunny days. Not any more. This past trip we rode in both bright sun and driving rain; I was very visible - very good to hear.

Twostars, I actually had to use 2 of those equalizers on my rear lights,1 wasn't enough load on the system for my stock flasher to flash at the normal rate. The diode kit is used on bikes that have one signal indicator on the dash to prevent one side from back feeding to the other through the indicator light. The Royal Stars already have a diode on them to prevent this so you don't need the diode kit they sell. The signal stablizer works like the load equalizer I believe not 100% sure on that one. I originally bought the kit from them that was supposed to work with the RSTD and Venture but the diode kit and their electtronic flasher had to go. I missed my auto cancel and my flashers were doing some weird things til I installed the equalizers.

So I can test this by wiring the two equalizers (a single GEN-7.5-30) in parallel to one of the turn signal circuits. It should blink normally while the other side with no equalizer continues to blink fast. What about the heat? I guess this would be OK for the test but if it works and I go with another GEN-7.5-30, then it would be best to use both on each circuit.

If I understand how the equalizer works correctly hooking both wires to the same signal won't help you. I believe the equalizer is only capable of adding 7.5 amps to the system wether you connect one wire or two the added load would be the same. If you connect it per the instructions and your signals still flash fast you need to add a second equalizer to the rear signals. That was the direction I got from the folks at Custom Dynamics.

lonewolf96, you're right, the GEN-7.5-30 is a single load that's shared by the two (left/right) circuits. There are a couple of diodes in the mix as well. The two separate leads had me thinking there were two loads in the package. Rather than get another equalizer, I'm going with the stabilizer. That way I can avoid the heat generation and if I decide to go with LEDs in the front, the stabilizer can already handle it. Custom Dynamics will give me credit for the equalizer (if returned in the original package) and won't charge me shipping for the stabilizer since my original order was over their $150 minimum. They've been pretty decent. Will let you know how the stabilizer works.

Received the metric signal stabilizer from Custom Dynamics this week. The invoice indicated that they had given me credit for the equalizer (which I agreed to return) even though they hadn't received it yet. Nice folks.

 

Installation was straightforward. In addition to the two wires that splice into the left/right rear turn signal circuits, and the ground wire, the stabilizer requires power so there is a fused wire that goes directly to the battery. This time I soldered all connections rather than use the quick connects. I removed the quick connects from the rear where I had connected the LED cluster to the brake and running lights and soldered those as well. Started up the bike and everything works as advertised. The turn signals flash at normal speed. It looks great. Nice product.

 

Still not exactly sure why I got the rapid flash with the equalizer. Unfortunately I sent it back before I had the chance to check it out with soldered connections. When in doubt - solder.

Makes a huge difference lighting up the back. To anyone else considering doing something on the back of the bike, highly recommend the 100 LED brake light and the signal/run/brake dynamic LED.

Looking at the Custom Dynamics site, for the front flashers it shows 3 different plug configurations for the front signal lights, to convert to the LED boards. What configuration are the front signal lights for an 08' RSV? (I actually have the front and rear already installed (by an acquaintance) as boards, and just want to know as I am ordering spares for a road trip I am going to do this Winter).

 

Ok, time to start securing my cottage for the season, then head home later today. Sucks when you wake up this early!

Why do you need spares? LEDs should last years longer than incandescent bulbs. I had these on my V Star 1100 & have had them on my RSV now for 5+ years without any problems.

Did anyone else happen to notice this line in the Dynamic Clusters write-up?

 

"Dynamic Clusters

are NOT Dot approved, for off road or show use only."

 

Not that I wouldn't get them, just thought I'd point that out.

 

That being said, which clusters do we need to get for a 99 Venture? I tried to get one of the bulbs out of my rear turn signal and the stupid glass just spun in the base. It still works for now but I'd rather just get the right parts and swap it out once instead of having to get another bulb for it now.

I carry one spare of all my lights, just in case, on all LONG Road Trips. Flying Bike to Cali, then PCH, is a long RT from Halifax.

Yeah, I noticed, but, really, do you think LEOs know or care? All they see are brighter & more noticeable lighting that also reacts more quickly, thus, giving others a fraction of a second sooner indication of stopping which can amount to a few feet, saving me from getting hit. I'll take that chance even if not DOT approved.

 

On another note, I wear earplugs, too, & in some states that's illegal. My hearing is more important than a not-so-well-thought-out law telling me I can't wear them. I'll take that chance, too.

 

Got a little off topic, so, back to it: I love the LEDs for another reason. They use much less current leaving me with more for other things like heated clothing, etc.

Oh, I'm all in on the LED thing, for sure, just thought I'd point that out.

 

Still wonder if anyone knows which Cluster works with the older Ventures... 99s and the like.

I believe the '99-'04s use the 1156 on the front & '05+ use the 7507. The rear use the 1157 for all years. Is that what you're asking? I hope I didn't reverse the #s, but, if I did, I'm sure someone will jump in & correct me.

Yes, that's what I'm asking. However, I don't see a replacement for the 1157. The only ones I see are for the 1156.

On the Custom Dynamics site they show how to tell which bulb you have. Pull one from the signal light and compare it (my first post had the link - http://www.customdynamics.com/bulb_i...ation_help.htm)

 

As for "not DOT approved".... I saw that but figure better to be safer with the brighter lights. As was mentioned, I don't think a cop would be able to say it wasn't DOT approved just by how bright the lights were or that it was a run/brake/turn light in one housing. Doubt they'd really care.

You're right. I don't see them there either. Wonder why. Give them a call. I actually called Radiantz to see if they'd modify them to work on my '05 V Star 1100. They had me send them in with my old bulbs & they did the mod. Now they have the 7507s, which is what I now have on my RSV, then they didn't. They also didn't charge for the mod. That's service.

 

Anyway, contact them & see what's up.

Actually, I believe you did swap the numbers. Since the fronts have running lights I believe the 1157 dual filament, listed at 27/8 watts, would be the front bulbs and the 1156 single filament would be the rear bulbs.

Yeah, I think you're right. I got confused because my rears are now run/turn/brake & they used to be just turn. I like having the extra run/brake lights now with the turns included in the same housing. Thanks for clearing that up.

On my '08 RSTD there are no 1157 or 1156's. That is what I ordered originally and had to exchange them. The front lights have 3 locking pins on them. If you tell them you need the 3 pin base for a Yamaha they'll know what you are talking about. BAZ15D-3 is the part # they use for the lights, 7507 are the lights on the rear if you are only using them for turn signals.
