I was chatting with the venture owner Janne jurvelin and he had a pic of his Mk2 scoot with 2 projector bulbs where the original square oem headlight would go, i asked him about it and he directed me to this site that offers the projector light pods and universal mounting plates for what I thought was a pretty reasonable price. the result looks quite similar to Snaggletooth's hella light conversion, but I think it would end up a bit cheaper, and they supply the mounting plate, probably eliminating some fabrication work.

I have never dealt with this company and havnt done this install I am just posting this info as most of us G1 owners are always looking for better ways to see the road. so please dont ask me how to do it as I havnt done it myself.

Brian, if that is a Mk2 it has the Mk1 headlight trim & headlight mount assy. More likely the scoot is a Mk1, with Mk2 baggage conversion.

I see the original front clear plexi cover is removed. Is that due to heat issues with the new light config?

I cant speak for this exact setup, but I know that Snaggletooth checked on the heat with his similar set up and his was fine. He used the original cover and headlight trim with his MK1

I was my understanding that you can only do this to the mkI. Is that true/

I will double check with Janne the next time I see him online but I understand it to be a mk2. i would think you will have to remve the headlight assy and mount the adapter plate somehow.

With the MK1 just just remove the headlight and drill holes in the headlight retainer ring and mount the adapter plate to that.

I have the same set up as Snaggletooth & I have rewired it to run both lights on high beam & have not seen a heat issue. No melting of the rubber boot or anything.

 

This adapter plate is a different version of what a few of us have. I think I am concerned by the single mount point on either side. If it is up against the existing headlight bucket it is probably fine, but I can't tell.

 

As far as I know, what Snag & I and a few others have can not be done to an MKII.

 

Attached are a few pictures of this. First picture doesn't have the cover plate installed yet, just the adjustment plate. This was originally Tim Grey's idea, that I pirated and made a set for myself and one I sold one ebay, then made a few adapter plate pairs for some members. This is just a design I came up with after seeing Tim Grey's mock up of 2 hella's setting in the headlight housing.

As I don't speak da lingo there I'm only picking up bits on the specs. It looks like they are only H3's at 55 watts compared to the H9's in the Hella 90mm modulars. Heat should be no more than a standard headlight I'd think. The pic looks like there should be room for the plexi cover.

I see what you mean, the 90 hellas have a square mounting profile for the 4 retaining screws, these are rectangular. Probably not near as good as the 90's. They are like aircraft landing lights.

So, the question needs to be asked of those who currently run this setup. Is it any brighter than say, what my 85 has as stock?

That would be a hard call. These 90's are unbelievable, seriously. They aren't just a little better, they light up the night.

 

I even see a distinct reflection on road signs during the day when I have the high beam on, not a glimmer, its very noticeable.

 

Below is another post of picture this afternoon showing somewhat of a shot of lights, both are illuminated in picture. High beam is much more distinct.

 

The only tiny complaint I have is due to the smooth surface on the bulb, not fresnel style lens like stock, if a bug gets smashed on cover, it makes a somewhat noticeable shadow at night in light pattern. I can live with this minor problem.

 

Also put a head light modulator on this year, there gonna notice me coming. (Putting flame suit on now cause I know the modulator has people that don't like them.)

I dont know for sure, but i do know of a few guys that changed their MK1 bucket assy to a MK2 in order to push the light farther forward to get more light on the road. SO, it should be able to be reversed and should work, at least in theory.

Part of the issue in this conversion is finding a set of the 90 hellas at a reasonable price. I happened across a guy on ebay when I first did this that was selling a pair of high beams & a pair of low beams. The high & low beam housings are totally different in construction, its not the same as putting a different bulb in. I had to get a pair of each, which is what resulted in my selling the second set on ebay and irritating a member here. I didn't handle the situation in a very tactful manner, I admit.

 

Snaggletooth did some searching so he is a better source of possible suppliers for the 90 hella's. The guy I got them from doesn't have them anymore.

 

If there is some interest in this I can get the adapter plates made for about $60 a set. I'll do that and supply complete installation instructions. Sourcing the lamp modules is up to someone else. I am swamped with extra projects right now. I am trying to arrange a bulk purchase of an improved TCI along with wiring & testing them. Also just getting to ride scooter finally.

 

I attached a PDF of the instructions I made up for installing these lights.

 

As far as the ability to put them in a MKII, I don't know. Bongobobny has a set of the adapter plates. I'm not sure if he has a MKII to do some cliff notes though.

Is there any advantage to these over the high intensity discharge unit, apart from flipping hi/low beam more smoothly ? Do they also use less electricity for more light ?

 

I'm really happy with my HI-D setup, but am not so sure of whether I'd have space on other bikes (XJ550, XTZ660).

Dunno if that would tell you anything for sure, as my 85 is the same as a MK2

 

ok, I just chatted with him on Facebook and found out that the bike is infact an 84 MK1 with different bags.

 

Darn, youre right again Jack! :bang head::think: and uuhhhh....so is Rocket.......
