I am so p!$$ed off. I have a 07 RSV. At 11,000 km's (6800 miles) I had to get the rear shock changed because it started to leak. Still under warranty and at 34,000km (21,000 miles) it is shot again. Dealer contacted Yamaha for a replacement and they were told no way, not going to happen. Yamaha Canada told dealer that it is my fault that there is no way I should need another shock and if it is leaking, it is something I am doing.

Dealer said Yamaha told him maybe I run tires underinflated. Well I don't, I always check my air pressure and besides, even if that were true, I don't think that would ruin a shock.

So in other words, what Yamaha is saying is, it is impossible that they replaced the first shock with a possible defective one.

 

Now, I know you only have my word on this..... I am 190lbs and rarely, my wife will ride on the back. She is 110lbs. I do not travel on rough roads and don't abuse my bike.

The shock is over $600.00 plus labor to install it. How can a company offer a 5 year warranty if they can so easily get out of it?

 

I am calling Yamaha Canada customer service tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to say, what to do about this, where I can turn to for help. There is no way I am going to bite the bullet for this. You can't tell me that they can say with 100% certainty that the replacement shock they put in was 100% perfect.

 

HELP, please with your suggestions, comments. Help me arm myself for the attack on Yamaha Canada tomorrow.

keep raising hell till they fix it. Keep going higher and higher, don't hesitate. How stuoid to say it is something you are doing.

Tell them to log on VR and read about all the great high quality yamaha shocks that have had to be changed out by most of the folks here. I would Venture (pun intended) to say it is probably around 50%. Thats alot of shocks. We are constantly hearing about someone having to change out thier rear shock with very low miles on them. Some have had to change them out 2 or 3 times,under warranty.Alot of use have had to pay big $$ to do a change out. You know Yama-moma Knows whats going on. You can bet your butt they know they have a piece of crap shock. If they didn't think they had a problem they wouldn't have added that useless vent hose to the new shocks. They put a 5 year warranty on the bike,they need to honor it.

Before I get bent to much out of shape talk to yammy, the dealer could be pulling a fast one here......Just a thought.

 

If not then blow the gaskets, I just don't trust a stealer and put more faith in yammy than a stealer, I could be eating crow on this too..

If the bike is under warranty there is no reason not too fix it. Even if it is just out of warranty they should fix it.

 

Try not to yell as that is not going to help. Good Luck

If they disbelieve you that a factory shock can die so quickly, kindly ask them to contact me, I'll be MORE than happy to let them know how shyte their shocks are as I had mine replaced before my 2006 warranty wore out and the dang thing busted out again JUST after the 1 year mark.. and I always ride solo..

 

Now I have a Works! shock and it works great!

 

yeah.. raise hell and keep at them.. keep at it.. inferior products need NOT be tolerated.. no way..

i had a little trouble getting them to replace the 5th rear shock under warranty!! yes 5!

 

hang in there, they have to prove that your doing something wrong, offer them a copy of your warrranty coverage rules.

Tell the dealer to prove it was something you did. Otherwise you have in writing that it is in warranty and will be replaced by warranty or you'll be happy to take the dealer to court. I would NEVER go back to a dealer that didn't stand behind his customers. That dealer is just plain STUPID.

I honestly don't think it is the dealer. I know them and I know they would not do this to me. Actually they are the only 5 star dealer in Alberta last I heard.

After having my bike for the first 3 months, the battery was shot. I took it in and it was covered. I just found out today after the head mechanic, who I know very well told me that Yamaha denied the battery claim. Dealer never told me about it until this shock issue came up. They said they wanted to make sure I was looked after and didn't want to give me the grief of Yama**** denying the claim.

The head mechanic said he argued with Yamaha and they said there is no way I should have to have a second one and that was that. He called me right away and suggested I contact Yamaha Canada customer service. He said for what ever reason, when the customer calls there is better luck. I agree, I don't understand that, however, is it the dealers fault. If they are told no, what can they do? Tell them they will stop selling their product? Who knows. I know if I were the dealer, I would fight tooth and nail for my customer, however, if the final answer is no, then what. I will call customer service tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone so far. I will keep my cool but trust me, they will know I mean business.

By the way, I have to take my rear tire in tomorrow to the dealer. WOW, was it worn out. The dealer gave me FREE TIRES for as long as I own the bike, my choice in brand as long as there is at least 7000kms on them. So I took the tire off the bike tonight and they will charge me $20 to change the tire. Not too shabby i'd say.

Also, just so you understand that I trust my dealer, I was there one day to pick up some oil and a filter. I was going to go home to do my oil change. He said to bring it around back into the garage. They did the change for me for free. They didn't have to do that.

So far, this dealer has never screwed me around. If they ever do, I play a very mean game.

Then I would really go after Yamaha on that. IMHO these bikes should never need a shock for at least 100k.Its a bad design and now they want to stick it to us. Seriously makes me think of changing makes on my next bike.

Assuming your dealer is not pulling one over on you. I would suggest bringing it to another dealer and see if they can get it under warranty if so mention to your dealer that should give the dealer the an idea how Yammi is dealing with them and raise their concerns a little higher than a district manager.

You'd think after 12+ years of having to replace a Hundreds?/thousands? of shoddy rear second gen air shocks, Yamaha would wise up and change to a better shock?

 

I bought my 07 bike last March (482 miles on bike) and went to fill up rear shock and nothing... it leaked out in 60 seconds... took in to have radio and windshield replaced(cracked) and rear shock checked. don't know what they did but it holds pressure for a littlle while but the bike does not raise?

 

they will be getting back this winter to put a new shock in.

 

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

 

Perhaps a poll is warranted(pun intended)... for second gen rear air shocks, asking if your rear shock went out before the 5 year warranty, and if so, how many times was it replaced? would be good to know what percentage of our organization has this problem?.... would be good ammo when addressing the yamaha customer service reps and just might force them to address the problem(use a better replacement shock).

Just a thought...

This is a little off subject. We all know about the 2ndGen shock problems, but what the 'H' did they do to the design when they came out with the 2ndGen?? I rarely hear about a rear shock going on a 1stGen..... Too bad they're not interchangeable...

I can tell you from experience that the burden of proof that you have abused the bike is on Yamaha. If they cannot positively identify exactly what you are doing wrong, then they have to cover the repair. I'm not saying you are doing anything wrong BTW.

Has the Yamah Regional Rep looked at your bike? How would they know if you abuse the bike without looking at it? Has the original shock been sent to Yamaha to diagnose?

If the rest of the bike looked like it hadn't been taken care of or had heavy modifications...

I can tell you that Yam WILL respond if you maintain the pressure. You want to remain calm and respectful at all times!

 

I had dealings with Yam over a noisey Roadie engine. This engine tossed a pushrod the second time I started it, and had the worst knock I've ever heard on a Roadie. Most of them knock pretty bad.

 

Here's how I would work the problem, based on my own experience: First, let the dealer shop analyze the problem. Keep all your paperwork. Ask to have the bike looked at by the traveling tech rep. The dealer shop should make these arrangements, but if they won't do it, call Yam HQ and they will make the arrangements. After the tech rep looks at the bike he will make his own report, and Yam HQ will receive a copy of it.

 

If still no help at the local level, then make a nice, polite phone call to Yam HQ. They have agents there who field these calls. They will contact the dealer shop for more info. They may resolve the issue quickly, or deny it. In either case they will issue a written report and should send you a copy of it. I'll bet Yam HQ will resolve in your favor if you allow them time to properly evaluate the situation via the tech rep.

 

If you still don't get your way, you have the choice of pursuing the issue through the courts, or just eating the cost of a new shock. Considering the low cost of these things, it probably doesn't make sense to hire a lawyer, though you could make some waves by filing a complaint with your state attorney general.

 

I have seen Yam replace entire engines (one in a RSTD and one in a Roadie) just because they made certain noises the owners didn't care for. So, I know Yam will bend over backwards to make you happy. But you will probably have to do a song and dance, and it might take several weeks. They have their policies and methods they will follow, to protect their business from unscrupulous claims. Yours seems like a perfectly reasonable claim. Knowing the Company as I do, I feel like they will do the right thing once they've had the time to make a good assessment.

Greg, I'll contact my guy at Yami corporate in Cypress to see if he can give me a solid contact for you in Alberta to talk to about this. Whenever I've gone this route, they have been very accommodating. I'll get back to you as soon as I hear from him.
