Venturous Randy Posted August 1, 2011 #1 Posted August 1, 2011 My Compaq Presario lap top has gotten real slow. I did the disc cleanup and defragged and restored to an earlier point and it is still slow. I went on to cccleaner and did a scan and it did the usual 3,000+ problems found and it said it had a free download. But when I installed it to do the scan and it found problems, it requires me to purchase to do the fix. Is the free download just for the scan? Any other suggestions? RandyA
KeithR Posted August 1, 2011 #3 Posted August 1, 2011 Did you download it from here....its free Keith www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Kregerdoodle Posted August 1, 2011 #4 Posted August 1, 2011 you can try MalWare Bytes, and Spybot search and dystroy, both free, these will clean up any walware that moght be slowing it down. Do you go through a firewall?? good to do, but can really slow down your PC.. how much Free space do you have on your HD ? How many desk top Items do you have open / running??? Give those a try, they might help.. My Compaq Presario lap top has gotten real slow. I did the disc cleanup and defragged and restored to an earlier point and it is still slow. SC89Venture Posted August 2, 2011 #6 Posted August 2, 2011 Use Avast free edition. http://www.avast.com After installing, do a Boot Scan and let it run.

GAWildKat Posted August 2, 2011 #9 Posted August 2, 2011 Every link FLB posted I use when fixing computers for customers, I say use them.
ragtop69gs Posted August 2, 2011 #10 Posted August 2, 2011 Every link FLB posted I use when fixing computers for customers, I say use them. I run all three of those apps plus Comodo Firewall. Firewall runs always. MWB I run twice weekly and spybot is always running resident. AVG works good on my system. I have Avast on the other computer and I'm getting to like it more & more.
GAWildKat Posted August 2, 2011 #11 Posted August 2, 2011 I like Comodo, however hubby doesn't, we've had issues were it was too good at securing a computer within the home network. Yeah, it's supposed to be a good thing, but not when files get shared on the home network.
Venturous Randy Posted August 5, 2011 Author #12 Posted August 5, 2011 I looked at downloading some of these programs and it appears that none of them are free. In each case, when I looked at downloading one, I had to buy something else first. Ok, so much for free. Any other suggestions? Thanks, RandyA
flb_78 Posted August 6, 2011 #13 Posted August 6, 2011 Every one that I listed is free and I use them. There are paid versions which are supposed to be better, but the free versions work fine for me.
Michael_Bishop Posted August 6, 2011 #14 Posted August 6, 2011 Malwarebyte is free. There is one you can pay for but all it does is it will run in the back groud all the time. Free one works great for when you want to do a scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
ADC Posted August 6, 2011 #15 Posted August 6, 2011 [ame=http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html]Spybot - Search & Destroy - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com[/ame] Randy, spybot s&d works great and is FREE.
BlueVenture87 Posted August 6, 2011 #16 Posted August 6, 2011 One note, if any of the scans mention a a generic rootkit or TDSS just move your files off and rebuild the machine from a formatted drive. Rootkits usually can't be completely scrubbed from a system. Once rootkitted the machine can never be trusted again. Malware Bytes works best for me, the free version is available after a quick click-through in the install, simply decline the full vesion offer. Luck! -JK
Condor Posted August 6, 2011 #17 Posted August 6, 2011 I use Advanced Systems Care Free. Does a pretty good job of cleaning the registry, etc. Have you cleaned out the cookies yet. A bunch of those will slow down any machine....
