rounce Posted July 31, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 31, 2011 Hey, has anyone been able to import/ export a triked bike into Canada? What if it is broken down into parts? ( Re kit? ) Age exemption? Any way? Just asking! H.
darthandy Posted July 31, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 31, 2011 As far as I know, it's the same set of regs for importing any regular production or modified production bike. I've heard that it's best to go with a used bike. As far as dismantling it first, you would still have to get it registered once reassembled and the original ownership would show that it was a U.S. bike. I'm sure someone with more expertise than I will be along soon to help you out. Andy
Trader Posted July 31, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 31, 2011 I just brought an 88 vr from Chicago to Ontario. Because it was over 15 years old it didn't have to be registered with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles. All I had to pay was the GST portion at the border...the PST portion when I get the plates. You have to bring the original ownership to the US border services where you plan to cross at least 72 hours before you bring it across so they can make sure it's not stolen. If it was under 15 years old I would have had to spend $195 for the RIV, plus take it to the authorized inspection depot for the safety check. At the Canadian side all they checked was the VIN number. (I rode the bike home) I'm not sure about a kit bike. I know Kit car cannot be imported. friesman Posted August 1, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2011 A friend of mine here in Regina tried to import a complete trike with no success as the trikes were outlawed years ago when the old Honda 3 wheel trikes were deemed so dangerous when a lot of people got hurt. The blanket ban includes any kind of trike unless it is built in Canada. Don eventually ended up ordering a kit (Hannigan I think) and hiring a company here to do the install here. Then you will have to do a basic safety inpsection(no biggie) after its done before you plate it. If you need more info I can hunt down Don after he is back from vacation in a couple of weeks and get his number if you want to call.
