Everytime I pass an old fashioned post office I like to stop and take pictures, you would be amazed at some of the tiny post offices around the country.

We had our local branch closed about 4 months ago. I could see it out the window.

 

Not as convenient, but there is a main one 2 1/2 miles away.

Here in Angelica, NY we have a very old historic Post Office only open from 8 to 5, all PO boxes no delivery. In some ways it would cost more to close it it sucks not being able to get your mail only once or twice a week if you work out of town.

They need to learn how to operate and they wouldn't be in this bind..

 

I have to pass a major Post office and drive another 10 miles to get to mind and I'm not the only one that has to do this...

 

I rarely mail anything, so stamps are not in the house when I go and buy stamps I have to wait in line for a the stamps, asked the lady why don't you have a stamp machine here, she said they don't have enough traffic to get one..

 

I live in a very large city..

 

Wait till you want to buy a book they are next on the list to be gone

I work at the PO... they have been closing offices here in our area for about a year..

 

We have gone through job cuts more than any other branch of government...

 

With less people the service will suck more and it will give the Mucky mucks another reason to hand off mail service to some company that will charge you a buck or 2 to do the same as we do now for 44 cents

And they also had the only telephone in the holler and you and Alvin York used to call there and they'd run up the hill and get Ma to come down and talk to y'all.

They would save millions and millions if they just wouldn't be open on Mondays. They would save so much by not having to pay out the 8 mondays or so that they close for some sort of holliday. Also just close and not delivery mail on Monday Wednesday and Friday who cares I don't care if I only get mail 2 times a week. I may not walk to the mailbox for 2-3 days anyway.

True most of us get our bills thru e mail and what does come in the mail can wait for a day..

Im a tractor trailer operator for the Post Office and let me tell you, shutting down even for one day will back up mail unbelievably. When we shut down on a Monday for a holiday the following day is a nightmare for all involved. The mail still comes in whether we are open or not. If we close for more then one day then I shudder to think of the mess it will cause as mail backs up. But mail volume is not the issue here. While there may be some reduction in volume, the root cause of the Post Offices financial problems are being caused by the passing in 2006 of a bill, signed by the previous administration, which forced the Post Office to prepay the retirees health benefits to the tune of 7.5 BILLION a year. This is the only federal agency required to do this and the current administration is not willing to give this money back, nor is it willing to reduce the payments. There has been a temporary reduction in payments granted, which was then called a taxpayer bailout. That is not true. This is money being "taken" by an act of congress and not from taxpayers. The Post Office survives solely on stamp and mailing sales, nothing more. Taxes do not contribute to anything the Post Office does. No business or agency could survive under this "raiding" of its revenues. The actions of the 2006 congress and the inactions of this administration is essentially burying the Post Office. And before anyone says that is an overbloated Government agency, keep in mind that as the largest civilian employer in the US most of the employees are service veterans who had a job to come home to. We work days, nights, weekends, holidays 24/7. Mostly nights since most day positions were eliminated over the years. Many employees are forced to work their holidays so most dont even get to enjoy that benefit. That forced yearly payment of 7.5 Billion is why there is a sudden drastic movement to eliminate local Post Offices. Large plants are being shut down all the time now.

 

In an era where we have seen unprecedented job eliminations, why destroy a company that is self sustaining, employs thousands of military and civilian employees and provides a necessary service such as first class mail delivery to ANY point in the US for only 44 cents.

 

And please, I posted this not as a political statement. Just stating the facts as they really are. The public needs to be aware of this.

Ruffy I"m a Federal emp. too and was very unaware of the 2006 buy of the health benefits..

 

I know ours is not like that but this division did not start till after 9/11.
