waterbug Posted July 6, 2011 #1 Posted July 6, 2011 I have a 08 Venture and for some reason the metal bar that they call a stay keeps tearing the threads off my bolts and its a real pain to get them off and you cant tighten them down. I switch from the clear view to a factory one I cut way down. I went to the hardware store and matched them up in stainless but they seem week and the threads just tear off. The factory bolts have soft heads and round out way to easy so I wanted hex head. Anyone else have this issue? And if so what did you do to fix it. Thanks for any help:fingers-crossed-emo
Seaking Posted July 6, 2011 #2 Posted July 6, 2011 dunno but when reading this I'm thinking "cross threading"??
waterbug Posted July 6, 2011 Author #3 Posted July 6, 2011 No they aren't cross threading because I'm them in halfway by hand. They get so far in and then go so far in and stop and the threads are gone just in the middle of the bolt.
CaptainJoe Posted July 6, 2011 #4 Posted July 6, 2011 they are metric bolts and thread, not standard...it may be close, but, if you don't have the right ones it won't thread in all the way...
Carbon_One Posted July 6, 2011 #5 Posted July 6, 2011 I would rechase those threads with the proper sized "metric" tap or thread chaser and then use new bolts. Yamaha list the bolts at $1.33 each and the stay at $132.71 (ouch). I will have to check on the size later. Larry
Bubber Posted July 6, 2011 #6 Posted July 6, 2011 Call Pinwall of go to ebay and get a new one. I can't believe it is somthing that goes bad.
kkent66 Posted July 6, 2011 #7 Posted July 6, 2011 If it is an 08 I would take to a decent dealer and see about getting it replaced under warranty. I have a good luck with contacting Yamaha customer relations before taking to a dealer.
waterbug Posted July 6, 2011 Author #8 Posted July 6, 2011 Yes they are metric I know that . I can't find the size on any chart any were and they might be off .2 of a mil as I think they were 8.8 mil bolts if I remember rite.
hillrider Posted July 7, 2011 #9 Posted July 7, 2011 I would second chase the threads and make sure the new bolts will go all the way in before backing them out and installing the windscreen.
waterbug Posted July 13, 2011 Author #10 Posted July 13, 2011 Well I drilled out the ones the bolts only went half way. It's like they jumped a thread. I ran a tap down them and cleaned them up now I need to make me some support brackets. I can't believe how easily the plastic on these break! Fiberglass and metal would make a much stronger unit! The more I take it apart the more I see how flimsy it is.
