StuD Posted July 2, 2011 #4 Posted July 2, 2011 You need all transfer/sale paper documents. Then get forms from US boarder that you plan to cross. Fill out forms & drop off at US crossing, they will take 3-4 buisness days (to check if stolen/leans etc.)they will call you when it is clear. Go back into US pick up bike & bring into Canada. Pay duty & taxes then you need to regester & Insure. Must leave in the US till it is cleared by US. Hope that helps. :canada:

I already have a carrier I can mount on it. I'll be looking into it all after the holiday's over....if I do sell the trailer....any offers? Ebay item # 110707308624

That makes 3!!!!! A couple of years ago, I had brought a couple of cars and and bikes over to Canada from the US. You'll require a US title for the bike, but the trailer requires an ownership/title with a 17 digit ser# which it likely won't likely have (depending on the age). Since the bike is over 15 years old, you do not require a recall letter for the RIV. I believe there is still a $195.00 border fee and then the GST and HST to pay on the Canada side. Sometimes at the border they will ask to see your EBay add, for proof of price paid. For more info check out the RIV info site.

HST stands for "Harmonized Sales Tax" which simply means the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are rolled into one name... HST

Depending on what you would want to get out of it and what condition the frame is actually in, I might be interested. I have family near by that could meet up to complete the transaction with you in person, if it worked out and you decide to not keep the trailer.

Instead of GST and PST, it's just HST. We used to pay 7% PST and 5% GST but now it's just 12% HST. Hard to believe you'd be paying GST on something and then HST on top of that.
sarges46 Posted July 4, 2011 #19 Posted July 4, 2011 need to enter the RIV Program with a bike thats over 15 years old from date of manufacture. But, you will need a title from the owner who should sign it over to you. On the title it may show if there is another party involved ....like a mechanc lean or bank lean. However...in most cases the owner cannot have the title in hand unless it is free from any leans. You also need a bill of sale from the owner. Make sure the amout on the bill is accurate as it is a heavy price you could pay to save literally a couple bucks in tax at the border. For giggles call Yamaha in Toronto and with the VIN handy ask for a recall letter. Send a copy of bill of sale and sgned over title to the American border where you will be bringing the bike over at least three days prior to bringing it home. Now, the trailer.....these must enter the RIV (registry of import vehicles)..you pay a fee of 200?? You need title, if the thing has never been registered it it hard as all get out to bring it home. Trust me...but it can be done. I had a (US) bud buy my first camper for me...register it then sell it to me once he had the title in hand. Thank goodness for this site and the trust shown. Dont forget to send the title informaton and copy of bill of sale to the US border as well. Once it is cleared it must get inspected by Canadian Tire...this is included in the price of the RIV. You will also pay whatever tax at the border. Here in Manitoba it was just GST. PST was paid once I registered the vehicle. I have bought 4 bikes and 3 trailers over the years from across the line. Its not so bad.

Why don't I just put the plate off my burgandy 84 on the new bike and ride across like nothing has happenend? Thanks Carl...but I think I'll keep it legal!

If you don't need the trailer it is on, sell it to the other member from the U.S., and either borrow a trailer from someone on this side of the border or rent one and take it across and back. Marcarl Posted July 4, 2011 #22 Posted July 4, 2011 I was referring to the trailer you would tow behind the MC,,,, and I know someone who has towed such a trailer behind his MC for more than 4 years,,, in and out of the States and even changed the plates from American to Canadian and back again,,,, and he's still out of jail,,at least, the last I noticed.

Ya in that case they might question the trailer if it had Ont plates on it. Looks to me though that I would leave the trailer there,,,, it ain't worth the hassle in my opinion.
