Eck Posted December 7, 2007 #4 Posted December 7, 2007 Just a word of causion with this type lift from Harbor frieght.. I personally looked at one "in depth" with the bike shop owner answering my questions about that type of lift. At the time I was looking at his harbor freight lift, he had a chopper frame with only two tires and handle bars...this chopper did not have an engine on it, nor a seat... The harbor frieght stand is much wider at the "top" than it is at the bottom..which causes the lift to "rock" "wiggle" and to me it personally looks very weakly made.. The bike shop owner told me he bought it from harbor frieght in hopes it would do what he needed to repair bikes, but he said he will NOT put a bike on it that weighs over 400 lbs... He said with a heavy full dress Harley, he rasied the lift ONE TIME, and caled his crew over to help securely hold the bike so he could let it right back down, because the excessive weight on the lift after it was raised, it wanted to "TIP OVER"...and was way too unstable.. The shop owner went out and purchased a $3,500 lift after that.. I wiggled the stand with the "bare" chopper on it, and WOW, I grabbed it in hopes it would not TIP OVER.. The posted harbor freight stand WILL pick up a venture but the lift will require "steel stiffeners" be added to the floor section for stability. The lift will also require "Steel adjustable supports" that can swing out along the floor to "stabilize" the lift from tipping over to one side or the other. After my persoanl visual inspection of this Harbor frieght lift, I determined you ARE getting exactly what you are paying for.. a very cheap lift.. An accident waiting to happen..... IF YOU ADDED SOME STEEL SUPPORTS AND FLOOR STABILIZERS TO ENSURE IT DOESN'T TIP OVER, THEN YOU WOULD HAVE A LIFT THAT WILL RAISE YOUR VENTURE WITH A MORE WARM FUZZY FEELING OF CONFIDENCE IN SECURITY..
Thom Posted December 7, 2007 #5 Posted December 7, 2007 dragracer bought 1 and sold it the next week he said the something as eck
KiteSquid Posted December 7, 2007 Author #6 Posted December 7, 2007 I hope you read the first two words of my first post.... Caveat Emptor = Buyer Beware
BoomerCPO Posted December 7, 2007 #7 Posted December 7, 2007 Caveat Emptor = Buyer BewareOh shucks....I thought those words was a name of some new-fangled cheesecake.......Google and I are worn out...........
Midrsv Posted December 8, 2007 #8 Posted December 8, 2007 Further discussion on the HF lifts can be found at: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17061 DT
firewalker Posted December 12, 2007 #9 Posted December 12, 2007 I personally have the lift and have had no issue out of it, I rebuild bikes and have had 2 goldwings on it, that actually weigh a bit more than my RSV and stability has never been an issue...I have left the bikes in the air for weeks at a time with no problems....I at this time have a Virago 1000 on it...the only thing that I am going to add to mine is an automatic Chock that I bought from Harbor Freight also....I have had the lift for over a year now with trouble free usage...when I find more room I will be purchasing a second one so that while one is used by a bike that I have torn down I can have the other for when I do oil changes and things like this for friends of mine
Guest tx2sturgis Posted December 12, 2007 #10 Posted December 12, 2007 I personally have the lift and have had no issue out of it, I rebuild bikes and have had 2 goldwings on it, WOW! Were they side by side, vertical, or stacked one on top of the other??
Guest KinkyWinks Posted December 13, 2007 #11 Posted December 13, 2007 I've had one for about two years. It works for me. With the Venture I screw the stabilizer screws down as soon as I raise it high enough to get to them. On my smaller bikes I don't bother with them. I have also used it to build trailers on, C clamp a pipe bender and metal roller on, and, it makes a pretty good welding table. So, I figure I got my $300 worth out of it already. In the summer I roll it out in the driveway and raise my bikes up to power wash the bottom of them. I like it.
Condor Posted December 13, 2007 #12 Posted December 13, 2007 I just looked up the lift on their website. $379.00 So I guess it's strictly an area promotion. This is a bit off the subject, but did you know that if you look up something you're going to buy on the site and print it out they will honor that price in the store if it's lower. I saved a few bucks doing that once. Printed out a brad air stapler so I'd know what to look for, and they gave me the lower price after I found it.
Guest KitCarson Posted December 13, 2007 #13 Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Everyone: I have no wish to run down anyones products.......I have several friends who have the Harbor Freight lift or one similar.......they have all needed work to be safe. I had even considered buying one myself, but decided against it due to all the extra work needed to make it functional and above all SAFE!! Why deal with something that may cause your bike to fall, or crush your hand while you are trying to prevent or stop some kind of mishap. All the money you will spend on modifications to this lift will exceed the extra couple hundred you will spend on a quality lift. Some of them have automatic locking stabilizers and lots of goodies.......auto locking front chocks that lock the front wheel by its own weight......Stock as is ...........their platforms are braced and stable, and I am still looking but have found several in the $500 dollar price range that are quality lifts, I deal with equipment daily, backhoes, heavy equipment,,,,,tools, saws.........folks bad equipment or something not quite up to par will cause someone to get hurt. Just my two cents worth and I mean it in a well meant manner, not trying to run down a product, it is simply what it is. Respectfully Kit I also forgot.......there are three different models of lifts offered by Harbor Freight. Naturally the one everyone sees for sale for $199.00 is the little small one, there are two more models......all the way up to a 1200 pound lift. That little cheap one that everyone is looking at is not the end of the line.......they do have two better models.......and I use the word better as above........Kit
KiteSquid Posted December 13, 2007 Author #14 Posted December 13, 2007 I just looked up the lift on their website. $379.00 So I guess it's strictly an area promotion. NOPE, you need to print the coupon in my first post, which was valid when you posted. Take the coupon to your local Harbor Freight store with a pile of cash and they will exchange it for a lift at the price on the coupon.... I have also had the store manager honor an expired coupon... it never hurts to ask...as this offer is now expired..... you might try it... Ask nicely, and if the manager on duty says no, try again with a different manager on duty.
