bendtdj Posted June 26, 2011 #1 Posted June 26, 2011 I purchased 2 Wolo Bad Boys at the new Northern Tool & Equipment store in Sioux Falls on Saturday. Went to work on sunday to install them. One on my '84 and one on my son's 91 750 Nighthawk. We can get neither one to work. We wired just as the directions show to do. The relays will click and that is all. Any ideas? Thanks, Dave
mbrood Posted June 26, 2011 #2 Posted June 26, 2011 (edited) If using a separate horn switch... battery hot to fuse, fuse to pins 30 and 86 of relay, 87 from relay to hot lead on horn. horn negative to chassis ground. relay pin 85 to horn switch, through switch to chassis ground... (if using bike's original horn switch, splice pin 85 into the pink wire going to the horn switch. is that what you have? If so apply 12V direct to the hot lead... If that doesn't work, see if your leads are reversed on the horn. Edited June 26, 2011 by mbrood
bendtdj Posted June 26, 2011 Author #3 Posted June 26, 2011 Thanks, I will check it out later. Too frustrated now to go back to the garage. Dave
mbrood Posted June 26, 2011 #4 Posted June 26, 2011 Wolo shows the hot lead as the lead on the right as you look at the face of the horn with the leads at the bottom....
dingy Posted June 27, 2011 #5 Posted June 27, 2011 This is a schematic view of what mbrood described out in 2nd post above. Sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words. Gary
MiCarl Posted June 27, 2011 #6 Posted June 27, 2011 And here is how to do it using the stock horn switch, placing the relay into the connectors from the original horn:
bongobobny Posted June 27, 2011 #7 Posted June 27, 2011 Yah! Make sure you have the plus and the minus hooked up right on the compressor. Make sure 12 volts is getting to the horn with a voltmeter when you press the horn button and you hear the relay click...
bendtdj Posted June 28, 2011 Author #8 Posted June 28, 2011 We got the horns working. Dan's bike was a faulty ground. We ran a wire back to the frame instead of the bolt that held the old horn to the fork and loudness ensued. On my 84, my logic was more Mr. Rogers than Mr. Spock. I thought that since the instructions said to use an in line fuse, why not run it through the fuse block. I had an empty spot just waiting for something. It did not work, obviously. I ran a dedicated line from the battery, through an inline 20 amp ATC fuse to the relay and hot dog, LOUDNESS again ensued. I mounted the Wolo on the right side in place of the OEM horn. While putting thins back together, I got to thinking, (OH NO NOT AGAIN! this usually gets me in really deep doo-doo). I put a piece of chromed radio mounting bracket on the Left side, bolted both horns to this and wired them together on that side. The sound, I must say, is about 2 inches away from total obnoxiousness. I feel that it is just right to get other to see me, or at least to try to find the noise. Thanks for all the help in the replies. I love this site. I never would havve tried to do this without all the previous posts on installing these horns.
