I got my debit type card a couple of weeks ago with $25 on it.

You need to activate card before it will work and there are restrictions on using it.

Said something about not being able to pay at the pump with it. Also was a procedure if you used it at a restaurant, they had to take other form of payment that was in excess of Card amount and process it first then apply the exact amount that was on the card.

Just read paperwork that came with card and it must be processed as a signature based credit card. Any purchase that exceeds the amount on the card will be declined. So it sounds like you need to pay the amount of bill down to $25 or $50 depending on amount on your card with cash. Then have merchant process card for the remaining amount (or less).

Scanned usage rules, attached below.

That really frosts me when companies do that. Dangle the carrot, and then make it super difficult to get it. $50 bucks is fifty bucks and the customer should be able to use it anyway they wish. If they were truthful and told about all their restrictions up front they might not have had as many buyers. Another strike against Avon....

The debit/credit gift card rules are not Avons, they are from the credit card companies that issue them. My wife gets these from time to time as perks from sponsors. The best may to use these is to buy something that exceeds the value of the card. Most merchants can apply charges in any order they want. If your buying something for 55.00, they can run your gift card for the $50.00 value first and zero it out, then just pay them the balance with cash or your regular debit/credit card.

I usually use the gift cards at the gas station to fill up the cage. Go inside and Have them set the pump for the face value of the card. Leave the card, Shuts off automatically. go back inside and sign.

They count on people using it for some value less than the face value, say 48.60 and not bothering with the balance. The credit card company makes out on this I think, not the company providing the promotional rebate.

That's what I was able to do with mine today at the grocery store. Clerk used card and applied the $25 towards it, then I paid balance with my regular card.
