Scooter Bob Posted June 15, 2011 #26 Posted June 15, 2011 I got the polks for my rsv....still in the box though. Same here, but I can't get the box to fit between the fairing and handlebars. Couldn't resist Bubber:innocent:, but hey, I got yer thread back on top.
Drreb Posted June 15, 2011 #27 Posted June 15, 2011 Crotchety??? Hey let get back to the subject of the post , can we??????? They make a powder for that^^^^
MLCRIDER Posted June 15, 2011 #28 Posted June 15, 2011 There are differences of opinion on this issue. I've tried the Pioneers and the Polks. I still have the Polk speakers installed. I think that they are better than stock but unless your stock speakers are blown, not THAT much better. I decided long ago that we are just not going to get fantastic sound out of these little 4" speakers. I messed with it too long and even tried adding a small amp but nothing really made them sound great. I too liked listening to the stereo through the outside speakers but after buying the Edset headsets, I was finally pleased with the sound through the headsets and gave up on improving the external speaker system. I have to agree with Don, I just installed the Polk DB401 speakers and the difference is minimal, clarity seems a little better but not what I was hoping for, as Don said unless they are blown stay with the stock, John
Color01 Posted June 15, 2011 #29 Posted June 15, 2011 I installed the Polk speakers last year ...from the first moment ..I didn't like the sound ...the Original one's sounds much better.
Bubber Posted June 15, 2011 Author #30 Posted June 15, 2011 So the question on my mind is, how does the Harley sound so much better than most bikes. I have been hearing Harley's put out some really good sound. YES? NO? There must be a good speaker to install to at least make it tolerable. Right now it is just noise coming out that periodically you can make out a word or two.... thats it! Ya I have a head set but that isn't what I was looking for either. Any other help out there? What about you Texas boys you'all have opinions on most stuff, jump in here.

Here's a thought though, John Deere makes a sound system for their heavy equipment that has excellet clarity. You may want to take a look at their system. But then, I've heard you sing and I'm not sure that new speakers would improve your hearing.
Guest Posted June 15, 2011 #32 Posted June 15, 2011 (edited) Ya know, maybe Boomer will sell you two pygmies who can croon in your ear while you ride..... (but watch your pockets .. the sneaky bas***** are quite slick) http://static.newworldencyclopedia.org/thumb/b/bb/African_Pigmies_CNE-v1-p58-B.jpg/200px-African_Pigmies_CNE-v1-p58-B.jpg http://static.newworldencyclopedia.org/pskins/common/images/magnify-clip.png Boomer says he can make you a sweet deal for this "stereo" set. Want quad sound? he will throw in 2 more for free..... Seriously, im sure that there are much better speakers out there but will they hold up to the weather like the Polks will? Oh yea, I also bought the foam speaker "cups" to mount behind the speaker, in effect to make it a sealed unit, which would direct more sound out the front. You could buy them for your stock speakers as well and see if they offer any improvement. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_237XT42/XTC-4-Speaker-Baffles-Slim-line-2-5-8-depth.html?search=foam Edited June 15, 2011 by Ruffy
BuddyRich Posted June 15, 2011 #33 Posted June 15, 2011 I have been using Infinity's. I had to grind a little of the magnet away on the rears to get them to fit but they are way better than the oem's. .
OB-1 Posted June 15, 2011 #34 Posted June 15, 2011 Bubber, the Rodney Dangerfield of Venturerider... He just don't get no respect! :rotf::rotf:
Freebird Posted June 15, 2011 #35 Posted June 15, 2011 Most of the Harleys that I have seen simply have larger speakers. I think that they are at least 5 x 7. Much better than the little 4" speakers that we have.
BradT Posted June 16, 2011 #36 Posted June 16, 2011 I had a pair of Polk in the rear and did not think they were that clear. Have a pair of Pioneer which I thought sounded pretty good but did not sound the same when installed in the Venture. I have a pair of Kenwood that I think have been the best that I have used. Not much bass as they are too small as mentioned, but the they seem to be the clearest. The stock ones in the 08 seem pretty good, better than the 99's must just be newer. Brad
Eck Posted June 16, 2011 #37 Posted June 16, 2011 I got the polks for my rsv....still in the box though. Im sure they will sound great once I install them....... Ruffy, you can just leave them on the shelf my friend..they go to the benefficiary .. I had a Polk in the rear and did not think they Brad,, what the heck guy.. I wouldn't be braggin about this.. Sorry Bubber...didn;t mean to hijack your thread just got caught up in my own thoughts for a minute.. Back to speakers folks.....
Bubber Posted June 16, 2011 Author #38 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Thats OK Eck this thread has been going nowhere fast and picking up speed. What I gather is Polks are no better than the originals. And someof people have had good luck with the Polks and like them. Pioneers are a little better but no great improvement Kenwoods are better yet than Pioneers. Harley speaker on ebay are 5 1/2 inch so no go there. Other speakers on ebay are a shot in the dark at best. 4 inch speakers not going to give the concert sound we all want. So does that about sum it up? And, oh ya, BradT has two polks in the rear, according to him. :rotf: Edited June 16, 2011 by Bubber added additional comments
LilBeaver Posted June 16, 2011 #39 Posted June 16, 2011 Bubber: I know this is NOT a direct answer to your question but something you could do to get a slight boost out of the OEM speakers is to install a set of baffles. That is, 'shield' the rear of each speaker with a cone to direct ALL of the sound towards the rider(s). Just a thought.
kkent66 Posted June 16, 2011 #40 Posted June 16, 2011 I put the polks in last spring (3/2010) and really have been pleased with the sound and yes they are holding up well!!!!
eusa1 Posted June 16, 2011 #41 Posted June 16, 2011 i have the polks in my 2003, i installed them in about 2007 and they seem to work fine for me, i don't care for base noise, so the higher pitch works fine for me.
scottbly Posted June 18, 2011 #42 Posted June 18, 2011 I bought Boss CH4220 4-Inch 2-Way CAR Speakers on ebay for less than $20 to replace my original 1984 speakers. I knew I was taking a risk, but for $20 it was worth it. They installed easy with the bolt holes lining up and a perfect fit. The wiring included was cheap so I cut and soldiered the old wires to the new speakers. The sound much better than what I had, but the are Boss not Bose. A deal for $20. I have not been on the freeway year to see how they blast at top volume. I will let you know after my next ride.
