I am running AVG Free version 7.5... No cost ... Has found and fixed viruses before for me. I dont know if it will specifically take care of this one, as I have not had it before, but is worth a shot.

Link to download Free version. http://free.grisoft.com/filedir/inst/avg75free_503a1205.exe

(It is a shame some *Geeks* attach viruses to programs, several years back I used to run mIRC on my system and never had issues with the program. It was actually quite good for what I was doing.)

I also use AVGfree antivirus. it is free and works very well. all the computer magazines rate it as the best!

It is free- but you have to look closely at the website to download the FREE version. They sell their upgrade version but the FREE version IS free and it will remove viruses and trojans.

everybody should use this program!!! It is better than most others.

Jerry, I hope you can get this resolved...these things can be a real annoyance and sometimes the only resolve it to re-install the operating system from scratch, reformatting the hard drive in the process, and then re-installing the programs you use. Before doing this, backup your important data files to a CD or something.

Yeah I thought about doing that and it would not be a problem as most everything on this computer is backed it to an external HD.

As for those shortcuts, did you try checking the properties of them to see where on your computer they are pointing to? If you right click the shortcut, you can choose properties from the menu. Also, sometimes when you delete a shortcut, a message will appear asking if you want to delete the shortcut only or the actual file it's pointing to.

No I was so interested in deleting it I didn't even think to do that and of course that would have been the thing to do.

Sure sounds to me like you have this virus mentioned.

If nothing else, you'll gain a lot of knowledge about dealing with such things so there is a positive side.

Yeah that's what I call "Learning more about something then you ever cared to know about it" :big-grin-emoticon:

I was so interested in getting rid of all the parts of the program I didn't even think to do that.

Did you boot to safe mode. If not then boot to safe mode and then go to add remove programs in the control panel and try to remove it. The program should not be running in safe mode. If it is then it's a bit more work to stop it from running in safe mode but it can be done. If you can't resolve the problem and want the directions to do that let me know and I will send it to you via email.

Thanks for the information. This is just a laptop that I use to access the INTERNET while watching TV or sitting around the living room so it has none of my business stuff on it. It does have lots of pictures and some email stuff I wanted to save and I did.

Formated the Hard Drive and reinstalled XP, seems like we are good to go now.

I just wonder where I got the darn thing to start with. ECK probably sent it to me or may be that white headed Owl?:stirthepot:

Thanks for all the help,

Jerry,

Sorry you had the problem. I think you might've been able to get rid of it had you gotten the advise to start in safe mode a bit earlier. It's usually good to do a fresh install once in a while anyway in my experience. You'll probably notice a bit faster response time after doing that. Since it's mainly a web browser, sounds like you don't have a lot to re-install. As far as avoiding it in the future, just watch those pop-up dialogs. If you get them on the net and they say OK or Cancel, try to exit without doing either. Some of them make both buttons = OK!

Good luck bud!
