rjg1985 Posted June 10, 2011 #1 Posted June 10, 2011 Does anyone know if a back rest and arm rests from an 1987 Venture will fit on an 1985 trunk?
Condor Posted June 10, 2011 #2 Posted June 10, 2011 Nope, the '87 MKII is a 3 piece set up while the '85 still takes the one piece like the MKI '83-'84. The '85 trunk is sorta unique as it's larger like the MKII's but shaped like the MKI's.
saddlebum Posted June 10, 2011 #4 Posted June 10, 2011 Actually a couple of us were comparing the two at Freebirds MD and for all intents and purposes we concluded that the boxes were the same even the holes were drilled in the same places. The differecnce is (A) the parts bolted to the trunk which appear to be fully interchangeable. Any of the unused holes depending on what pieces are attached just have rubber plugs in them. (B) the mounting rack which for the most part is also identacle with the exception that the 85 rack has the additional latch allowing the trunk to be removed and used as a carry case. this appears to simply be an extra part welded to the some frame as used on MKII 86 - 93.
StuD Posted June 10, 2011 #5 Posted June 10, 2011 Can the MKII trunk be modified to work on my '85? Can't see why not. Just a change in bracketing to bolt it to the bike. I have a MK1 trunk on my 82xs400. :canada:
Wizard765 Posted June 10, 2011 #6 Posted June 10, 2011 Does anyone know if a back rest and arm rests from an 1987 Venture will fit on an 1985 trunk? Yes it will. The plastic between the 85 and the 87 are identical. The hardware attached is different but the holes will line up. The only other difference is the controller on the 87 where the 85 has another bag.
rjg1985 Posted June 10, 2011 Author #7 Posted June 10, 2011 Thanks for the input. I have been comparing my 85 trunk to pictures of an 87 and the reccessed area where the back rest bolts in looks identical. I like the looks MKII back rest.
Condor Posted June 10, 2011 #8 Posted June 10, 2011 OK, my apologies.... Hey, can't be right all the time. Good to know. This subject has been discused in the past, where was this info then?? So can I assume that we can put an 85-93 trunk on our 83-84's without a lot of modification???

Marcarl, Wizard765, and myself compared both and yes they are identical top pieces with the holes in the exact same place...
