muffinman Posted December 3, 2007 #1 Posted December 3, 2007 I am going to trike the 92 that I got from JRichard for Mini to ride. What I need is detailed pics of how the rearend and suspension is mounted. I would also like to know what type of rear axle is used.I Do not like any of the kits available and am thinking of making my own from scratch. So please either email me pics at r4774@yahoo.com or post them here so I can get started on getting all parts and materials. Thanks Jeff

Thanks Jeff good luck, jeff! i tried this approach, once before. got ZIP. i do know that most "trike kits", start out with a 7 1/2 inch ford rearend, but the internet doesn't show any place to get blue prints, drawings , nothing.if you "get lucky" , lol, give me a holler. i want to trike mine out also, but the kits are just too rich for my blood. just jt
Squidley Posted December 4, 2007 #3 Posted December 4, 2007 Jeff, Are you going to try and make it a true trike, or something along the lines of what Froggie has on his '99. I haven't forgot about our earlier conversation...just been swamped with work and I dont know of any kits by me to look at
BOO Posted December 4, 2007 #4 Posted December 4, 2007 My neighbor took his bike to a dealer in Wisconsin (out of business now) and had it triked. The kit came from somewhere in Texas. I believe he said the rear end was a ford. As for the axles I'm guessing they are custom made. Anyway he seems to know a lot about what parts it was made of. I will question him and see what he knows. I know he has no blueprints though. Jerry
rod Posted December 4, 2007 #5 Posted December 4, 2007 I am doing some work for a friend that had his house burned dow by the wild fire, his shop was saved and he has a realy nice HD trike. I will get some pics next time I am up there (next week?). It is the best set up I have ever seen; independent rear axles with adjustable mono shock for the pumpkin and air/coil overs on each wheel, with disk brakes all round. He said it was pricey but worth it in every way. After 60,000 mi no problems at all. Good luck Rod
Thom Posted December 4, 2007 #6 Posted December 4, 2007 have you checked out these http://www.badboyscustom.com/harley/daytona.htm
muffinman Posted December 4, 2007 Author #7 Posted December 4, 2007 Brad Yes I am going to trike the 92 but as for our earlier conversation I plan on doing the discussed change to the 84. Boo and Rod I appreciate the offers but if the bikes you are thinking about are belt drive it wont help me much. Hipshot I am thinking of using a Lincoln rear axle assembly as it has Cv shafts.Jags,Vettes, and some Toyotas have the same type rear axles.I will let you know what I actually go with and will take plenty of pics of the progress. I have to get Mini to agree on the body I plan on making as it is going to be her ride. Jeff
ctraylor Posted December 4, 2007 #8 Posted December 4, 2007 You need to check out the mazda Miata rear differential. It is independent suspension and is all self contained. The whole set up just unbolts and is mounted inside its own frame. I think it would work great for a trike.

hipshot Posted December 4, 2007 #10 Posted December 4, 2007 curtis! you da man! i knew one of the metric imports, was a better choice for a rear end, just haven't done the legwork to see which it was! thanks a million. just jt

Jeff sounds good to me , jeff! any help , at all, will be graciously accepted! i also have a very good friend, who owns a "recycled parts yard"! can't call them "junk yards", anymore.they have gotten" higher than a cat's back," on used parts!!! have you thought about what to make the "body " out of? just jt
GigaWhiskey Posted December 4, 2007 #13 Posted December 4, 2007 can't call them "junk yards", anymore.they have gotten" higher than a cat's back," on used parts!!! just jt LMAO
mini-muffin Posted December 4, 2007 #14 Posted December 4, 2007 Jeff's talking about a custom fiberglass body. Margaret
muffinman Posted December 4, 2007 Author #15 Posted December 4, 2007 Unless Mini lets me buy an English wheel it will have to be fiberglass.I would like to do a aluminum body that will reqiure about 400 hours of shaping. But she is the ultimate controller of the paycheck and where I spend it.So glass it will be right now. Jeff
Dragracer Posted December 4, 2007 #16 Posted December 4, 2007 I used to drag race, and have used this company to cut and respline axles. http://www.moserengineering.com/ I would think any older small truck or car axle could be shortened and used. The older trucks (Toyota, Datsun, etc.) had very small rear axle assemblies.
Guest KinkyWinks Posted December 4, 2007 #17 Posted December 4, 2007 Some of the older cars like a Triumph Spitfire have some nice setups also.
muffinman Posted December 6, 2007 Author #18 Posted December 6, 2007 Tonight I am going to be looking at a rear end assembly out of a 86 Toyota Celica.I will report to all watching this thread if I decide it will work for my project. Jeff
nyjerry Posted December 6, 2007 #19 Posted December 6, 2007 Take a look at a honda crv rear end set up. I looked at my crv and every thing looks self contained and a very small drive shaft, about the size of a ventures. My trike is going to be the old fashion type with the vw setup. I do have a question for everyone. I have yamaha 400 special I was thinking of useing for the front end. Do you think it is strong enough for the front end. Jerry
flb_78 Posted December 6, 2007 #20 Posted December 6, 2007 ok...I don't see a point in this though... http://www.taildraggersinc.com/Images/tricycle.jpghttp://www.mrtoys.com/big-wheels/pics/16-Inch-Big-Wheel-Tricycle.jpghttp://www.uberreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/hemi%20trike.jpg

Jeff Ummmm, an '86 Celica is a front wheel drive. Rear end isn't going to do you any good at all. I've got a home made GW trike in the garage, used a narrowed S-10 Rear end. Friends of mine used to love using a narrowed Ford Mustang II rear.
muffinman Posted December 7, 2007 Author #22 Posted December 7, 2007 RustyRecycledToy;155468]Ummmm, an '86 Celica is a front wheel drive. Sorry I forgot to put Supra in my original post.I want an independant rear suspension remember I will be riding it when Mini allows me. Jeff

Jeff hey , jeff!!! where is your "update", on the supra rear end??? will it work, or will it need to be extensively modified? just jt
muffinman Posted December 12, 2007 Author #25 Posted December 12, 2007 I have not seen the rear end as of yet.Work keeps getting in the way.I will let you know as soon as I see it. Jeff
