Puckman123 Posted June 8, 2011 #1 Posted June 8, 2011 Bike is smooth as glass at 80 in 5th gear, but at 65 gets very buzzy, same with third gear is nice and smooth at 55 mph, but gets buzzy at 35 mph. (would carb pilot circuit do this?- have new pilot jets on order) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

IMHO, just about any 4 cyl engine will have it's "sweet spot" where it just purrs but at other rpm's, not necessarilly so ... and if all things are as they should be (carbs, timing, plugs, etc. etc) then there ain't nuffin ya can do but accept it. Mine has a "buzz" at various rpm's ... been that way since I got it new. Seems to be more pronounced with the drilled out RK's as with them, there's little or no back pressure. With the stock mufflers, it's hardly noticeable.

I guess my MPG would be better if I did run 5th.....but I never bought this scoot for gas mileage.... Boomer.....who sez if yer upper lip ain't peeled back to yer forehead yer not going fast enuff....

Yes, a plugged pilot jet could easily cause that - At anything below 1/2 throttle, the pilot jet does provide a noticeable amount of fuel along with the main jet, so if one pilot jet is significantly clogged, that jug will not be pulling equally hard even if your sync is perfect. The pilot circuit is actually ALWAYS providing a fixed amount of fuel, it just becomes an insignificant percentage of the total fuel over 1/2 throttle. Why did you order new jets? Cleaning them is quite simple with a little spray cleaner and compressed air. Goose

Puckman123 Posted June 8, 2011 Author #10 Posted June 8, 2011 I ordered new jets because when I cleaned them out the first time, I used a bristle from a wire brush and may have damaged them and they are not that expensive. I am also going to put the original exhaust back on to see if that has any affect. Thanks for the replies guys.

Also important to make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks. Goose

I would change my shift points if I were you.. I didn't see anything in the OP to support that conclusion. 35 is a very reasonable speed to cruise in 3rd, as is 65 in 5th. In fact, even 35 in 5th is just fine as long as all you are doing is holding steady speed on level road, like in town traffic. He did not say he was trying to accelerate at all. And even if he was accelerating, i wouldn't call that feeling a "buzz" - it would be much more of a shake and pound. Goose

In fact, when I picked up my bike from the dealer...the mechanic stated that you must be up to speed travelling around 60 to 65 before I shall hit OD. He said the bike will use more fuel if I shift to soon and at a slow speed. I do like to hear my engine rev at high rpms...
