tufftom4 Posted May 31, 2011 #1 Posted May 31, 2011 I bought this 86 a few months ago for the bigger bags and sold my 84 now I can say I hate the 86. I went to make it tip top so I can make it to Vogel this summer with new tires oil and filter changes and new front springs with a trailer hitch. The things I have to unbolt and take off to do simple maintenance compared to my 84 is killing me I sometimes wish for my 84 back, I need help...lol
SilvrT Posted May 31, 2011 #2 Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) You're joking... right?? At least you don't have to buy a special adapter and a motorcycle/atv jack and jack the thing to max height just to get the rear tire off. EDIT: never bothered me when I "upgraded" from my '85 to my '87. Only time I had to take the bags, etc off on the '87 was when the rear tire needed changing and that's when all other maintenance on the rear end was done. And I could do it all on the centre stand. The amount of work is almost the same on my '06 with the exception of the above mentioned which to me, adds to the effort and expense of maintaining a 2nd gen versus a 1st gen. dingy Posted May 31, 2011 #3 Posted May 31, 2011 The rear luggage rack changed significantly in 86. Every thing is bolted in place with a wrap around rear end. I can pull both saddle bags and trunk in under a minute, they are key locked on. They may not be as big as the MKII's, but are a lot easier when it comes to working on the bike. Gary
Yammer Dan Posted May 31, 2011 #4 Posted May 31, 2011 83 thru 85s are a lot easier to work on. Can snatch those bags off while you are taking lids off 86 up.
friesman Posted May 31, 2011 #6 Posted May 31, 2011 I have 2 spare Brown bags for my 85 , I can send ya, then all ya need is the brackets from MK1 to convert it to an easy to work on machine...... Brian
Squidley Posted June 1, 2011 #7 Posted June 1, 2011 You wont be kicking yourself in the arse when you can pack that much more for the trip in those bags. The MKII has the best volume in the bags and trunk of all the Ventures, just takes a bit of getting used to for the maintenance.
ctraylor Posted June 1, 2011 #8 Posted June 1, 2011 Had the rear tire off my 86 many times and never had to remove the bags to take off the tire. ?????????????

barend Posted June 1, 2011 #11 Posted June 1, 2011 I'll sell you the whole rear end subframe with bags and trunk for .... Oh I don't know, make me an offer ....
Pegasus1300 Posted June 1, 2011 #12 Posted June 1, 2011 When you pull your bags you do not have undo the cross bar you can pull them as a complete unit just by undoing the 4 screws in each bag and spreading the bags at the front a little and sliding them back.Makes the bags much easier to remove. As has been said you can do a tire change just by putting a 2 x 4 under the centerstand and removing the right muffler. You can also grease the wheel splines this way but if you are going into get the pins and the needle bearing it is easier to pull the bags.I went from an 83 to an 86 to an 87 to an 88 then back to an 87 but never wanted the smaller bags again.I wish the RSTD/RSV bags were as nice.

tufftom4 Posted June 2, 2011 Author #14 Posted June 2, 2011 Ok it has now been a couple of days and I am done for now. I changed the fluids exept for the radiator which I plan on doing my next days off, new sneakers front and back and a trailer hitch that I got from a nice member from here and found some unexpected things from the po that I fixed, I did have a problem with the bike falling over when I went to put the back tire on but good thing it fell on the grass side of the driveway now I am definitely ready to do the tail of the dragon........now I need to wash off all the greasy paw prints and shine it up.
