Decided it was time to make it so we could charge cell phones in the trunk. Starting thinking of the best way to make that work and came across this. http://goo.gl/McHpJ seemed like the perfect arrangement and cheap so if I broke one it wasn't the end of the world. cut the entire swivel plug off of it and ran a harness back into the trunk. Ran it right off the battery with a fuse and relay switching it on and off with the bike. A little velcro to hold it in place and we are golden!

Thanks! It should be nice to have the harness back there for a trunk light of some sort too. I'm thinking an led strip.

I was going to do something similar but I was going to wire it hot so that I do not have to have the bike running to charge stuff. Charging cell phone type stuff draws very little power from the battery. For instance, my cell phone has a 0.200 amp hour at 3.7V battery, that means that if it is completely dead, I will use only 0.062 amp hour off of the bikes battery. Almost nothing.

I was also going to put an I pod in the trunk with an FM transmitter so that I can do tunes while riding. Just set it to shuffle and it will be like listening to the radio with no commercials.

When I lined my trunk I added a powered box with a switch and a LED light pod for lighting at night. Your power set up will probably be next to charge my cell, GPS and camera while on the road. Throw 'em in the truck, plug 'em in and be ready to go again.

Won't be hard to patch into the wiring already done.

Nice job.

Flyinfool...Actually did think about making it hot all the time. The way it is set up a switch would be easy, but can just leave the key on as needed for now. The bluetooth adapter I made allows music to be played and controlled without the phone plugged in but it seems to cut out when in the trunk. No worries, it's a stopgap for the next couple weeks that I am on call. (It's great to be able to use the phone without pulling off the helmet) It will be replaced by a GPS very soon. When I am not on call there's a 60gig ipod that velcros onto the tape deck door. Works perfect for this!

Snaggletooth...that light setup is perfect. I am going to steal that LED pod idea but might leave out the switch.

Thanks for the input and ideas. I enjoy tinkering on this stuff.

I have the pigtail wiring for my battery tender. I bought another pigtail wiring from a store. Cut it in half, added/soldered wiring to make it longer. Ran it through the trunk and bought one of those cell phone charger adapters that also uses pig tails. Works great. I figured I obviously am not using the battery tender while riding so might as well use the wiring for something. Cell phone can be charged in the trunk and no one knows.

Just like this but instead of the coiled wire, it just has a pigtail at the end.

Even if you want an accesory always hot, it pays to use a separate switch, if it shorts, you have an emergency cut-off and with spade connectors, you have an easy pigtail disconnect when you pull the trunk.

This is the set up I went with. All I have to do now is get some of that wire tubing to cover up some of the wires. I used LED strips and switch from Autozone, a power outlet and inline fuse holder from Walmart. The strips came with adhesive backs and to mount the power outlet and switch I used double sided automotive tape. Don't ask why the white and gray wires from the power outlet have been cut and reatached the opposite way with the blue connectors. That reminds me I still need to get a new cell phone car charger. Anyway this seems to work well for me.

You beat me to this one... That't what I was thinking for lights but will actually do a different switch. LOOKS SWEET!
