LWesson Posted December 2, 2007 #1 Posted December 2, 2007 Hi, What periodic service levels 4K, 8K, etc, must be done by the dealer? I'm at the 4K service and was thinking it is essentially an oil change and carb balance. Already did the carb balance 1K ago, so is there any reason to have the dealer do the service? pegscraper Posted December 2, 2007 #2 Posted December 2, 2007 No. The carbs seldom need synchronized, unless they've been tinkered with. Many go more than 50,000 miles and some much more than that. And if you're inclined to do service work yourself, go ahead. Just the hassle of dropping the bike off and having another ride available and leaving it for days and then picking it up again, is enough for me to figure out how to do stuff myself. Even if it is still under warranty where there's no other cost. That is, unless there is a major problem and parts need replacing. But for general service, do it yourself.

pegscraper Posted December 2, 2007 #5 Posted December 2, 2007 It's not a bad idea to check most or all of the stuff the first time around. Many things that are supposed to be greased or lubed or whatever from the factory are frequently bone dry - things like driveshaft splines. After that, things should be good for a long time. I don't look at the owner's manual for maintenance schedules myself. The figures are only pulled out of the air anyway, and they usually recommend more frequency than is really necessary, just to protect themselves. Since you're not afraid of wrenches, and if you do very much of your own car maintenance, you probably have a pretty good idea when stuff should be checked anyway.
brainfart Posted December 3, 2007 #6 Posted December 3, 2007 do it yourself - but keep acurate records. make note of what you did and when (dates). keep receipts, etc.. that way if you encounter any warranty related isues you'll have positive proof that the proper service was performed.

Monsta Posted December 4, 2007 #8 Posted December 4, 2007 More critical than the oil is to verify torque on key nuts and bolts. Axles, brakes, steering stem, grips, levers, body parts, etc. etc. That's probably the most important part about any initial service.

Dusty Posted December 5, 2007 #11 Posted December 5, 2007 My 07 RSV has 22,000 kms. It has been to the dealer once for service (initial) once for rear wheel noise and once to have trunk lights installed. That will be it unless something big and expensive breaks. Everytime it has gone in I have had to redo the work. Over filled oil level, loose parts, mickey mouse wiring on the trunk LEDs. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to leave the bike. I use the owners manual service schedule as a guideline, but don't do everything they list, either do they. I probably still over service the bike. Partly because I like to work on it and secondly I would rather do maintenance than repairs on the road. I do record every service and keep receipts of all filters, oil and parts I use. Helps my old brain remember and may help with warranty claims in future. My two cents...

I just took my 07 in for the 24000 but after chatting with VR's decided not to have him do the expensive Valve check or adjustment which was called for. I got a call from the dealer now saying he just recieved a sb to torque the head bolts on my bike so he can do the valves at the same time. Good dealer i would say huh? Central coast Yamaha in Santa maria ca..

Perhaps someone else knows more that i do on the sb but my dealer said that some of the 07 head bolts were missed torqued and a few heads may be leaking.. he said mine was ok but he will to the sb next time and will do the valves at the same time.. cant tell you much more.
